Notes on the cetrarioid lichens INGVAR KARNEFELT ANd ARNE THELL During our work on the phylogeny and evolution in cetrarioid lichens (Kbrnefelt et al. L992) two specimens were studied which should need further attention regarding search for additional material, preferably in nature in remote and isolated localities not visited frequently by lichenologists. Therefore it is our main intention with this paper to invite lichenologists (1) to pay attention to a peculiar lichen occurring on higher elevations in the Andes which presumably belongs to Cetraria and (2) to look for the presence of. Cetraia nivalis also in higher elevations in New Guinea and adjacent mountainous regions within the tropical zone. Since the reproductive structures have not been presented earlier for C. nivalis a full description is also provided of this species. This work is dedicated to professor Gunnar Degelius on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday. Gunnar was the senior author's first botanical teacher to and also introduced him into the fascinating field of lichenology. Materials and methods K6rnefelt, I. & Thell, A. 1993: Notes on the cetrarioid lichens. Graphis Scripta 5: 45-48. Stockholm. ISSN 0901 -7593. The new species Cetraria peruviana is described and its systematic position is discussed. Cetraria nivalrs is reported as new from New Guinea, and its ascomata are described. Ingvar KAmefelt and Ante Thell, Depanment of Systematic Botany, University of Lund, Ostra Vallgatan 18 - 20, 223 61 Lund, Sweden. This work mainly originates from the earlier primarily survey of the cetrarioid lichens (Kiirnefelt et al. L992). The results have been based on herbarium material examined from a large number of herbaria, i.e. ALA, BM, BP, CANL, COLO, H, FH, G, GZU, L, LAM, LE, LD, M, MB, NY, O, S, SFSU, TUR, UBC, UME, UPS, US, and WIS. For anatomical obsenrations, fragments of lichens and condiomata were sectioned with a Kryomat, Lnitz freezing microtome and sections put in lactophenol cotton-blue. After pretreatment with lUVo KOH-solution, asci were squashed in a 0.3 % Lugol's solution. Hymenial characters were studied with a Zeiss Axioscope light microscop€, and photomicrographs made with a Zeiss M 35 W camera. Cetraria peruviana Kiirnef. & Thell, sp. nov. Thallus eo C. nepalensr"s similis, sed lobis minoribus magis canaliculatis sine emergentiis marginalibus differt. Strata corticalia hyphis pachydermaticis paraplectenchymaticis composita. Thallus PD-, K-, C-, acida lichesterinicum et protolichestericum continens. Type: Peru, Dep. of Cuzco, C. Bues, alt. 4000 m, Herb. G. K. Merrill (FH, holotype). Thallus composed of rather curved lobes, c. I cm high, lobes c. I-2 mm wide, c. L30-150 pm thick, dorsiventral and canaliculate, dark brownish on both surfaces, rather smooth, Do
