Space is individualized and subjective. It depends on the situation and the relationship in<br />

that situation. It is defined as a physical area <strong>of</strong> the individual and isdescribed by the<br />

behaviours <strong>of</strong>those who occupy it.<br />

Time is defined as the duration between one event and another as uniquely experienced<br />

by each human being and is a relation <strong>of</strong>one event to another event. It is characterized by<br />

life processes dependant on the distance and the amount <strong>of</strong> information given. Time is<br />

irreversible, measurable and subjective but based on perceptions (George, 1995:213).<br />

3.3.2 INTERPERSONAL SYSTEMS<br />

The interpersonal system involves interaction by two or more people. The concepts used<br />

in this system are interaction, communication, transaction, role and stress. The main<br />

concept is interaction. Interaction is characterized by values, human relationships, being<br />

influenced by perceptions, mutuality, verbal and non-verbal communication, through<br />

effective communication, irreversibility and dynamism. Interaction is therefore defined as<br />

the observable <strong>of</strong>two or more persons in mutual presence.<br />

Communication is defined as a process whereby information is given from one person to<br />

another directly or indirectly. It is characterized by verbal and non-verbal symbols. It is<br />

situational, irreversible, perceptual, transactional, personal and dynamic. It is influenced<br />

by language spoken or written and behaviour <strong>of</strong>parties interacting. Communication is a<br />

major social process that develops and maintains human groups and societies.<br />

Transactions are derived from perceptions and their interpretation. They are unique<br />

depending on the individual's perceptions and are short-lived. Transactions are defined as<br />

a process <strong>of</strong>interaction in which human beings communicate with their environment to<br />

achieve goals set after interpretation <strong>of</strong>perceptions.<br />

Role is described as a set <strong>of</strong> expected behaviours <strong>of</strong> those who occupy positions in the<br />

social system. These persons are guided by a set <strong>of</strong>procedures or rules that explain their<br />
