DEFINITIONS<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>UK</strong> film industry and <strong>the</strong> ‘core’ <strong>UK</strong> film industry<br />

<strong>The</strong> ‘<strong>UK</strong> film industry’ is defined in this report to include those activities which arise in <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong><br />

from <strong>the</strong> companies and/or individuals employed in <strong>the</strong>:<br />

• different stages <strong>of</strong> film production in <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> (including pre- and post-production)<br />

• distribution <strong>of</strong> films (both <strong>UK</strong> and foreign-made); and<br />

• exhibition <strong>of</strong> films (both <strong>UK</strong> and foreign-made).<br />

This is a wider definition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> film industry than used in our 2005 report.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> focus <strong>of</strong> this report – like <strong>the</strong> 2005 study – is on a narrower range <strong>of</strong> activities,<br />

which for clarity we now term <strong>the</strong> ‘core <strong>UK</strong> film industry’. This includes companies and<br />

individuals involved in all film production in <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong>. But it only includes <strong>the</strong> activities in <strong>the</strong><br />

distribution and exhibition sector associated with <strong>UK</strong>-made films.<br />

This means that <strong>the</strong> economic activity associated with <strong>the</strong> distribution and exhibition <strong>of</strong> films<br />

made abroad is not included in <strong>the</strong> estimates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> core <strong>UK</strong> film industry presented in this report.<br />

A <strong>UK</strong> film is defined as any film which is certified to be <strong>British</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> State for<br />

Culture, Media and Sport under Schedule 1 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Film</strong>s Act 1985 .
