US (<strong>the</strong> 95 th percentile in Column 2). But for <strong>UK</strong> films, <strong>the</strong> probability increases markedly. For all films<br />

where <strong>the</strong>re was some <strong>UK</strong> involvement, 30% (<strong>the</strong> 70 th percentile in Column 3) earned more in ticket sales<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> than in <strong>the</strong> US. And for films which were solely <strong>UK</strong> productions (as opposed to a co-production<br />

between <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> and ano<strong>the</strong>r country or countries), <strong>the</strong> proportion earning more money in <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> than <strong>the</strong><br />

US increases to 55% (45 th percentile in Column 5).<br />

<strong>The</strong>se results suggest that <strong>UK</strong> cinema-goers have a greater propensity to watch <strong>UK</strong>-made films than <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

US counterparts. To isolate <strong>the</strong> extent to which <strong>UK</strong> films’ better performance at <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> box <strong>of</strong>fice is due<br />

to domestic audiences’ preference for indigenous films, we have undertaken some econometric analysis,<br />

updating an exercise reported in our 2005 study. This is explained more fully in Box 8-1.<br />

Our analysis seeks to identify whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> <strong>UK</strong> box <strong>of</strong>fice receipts for a film are statistically significantly<br />
