An Alternative Future for the North East Mission Industrial Zone

Over 4,000 invitations were distributed in three
languages, and attendance was approximately 65
(not including the consultant team) for the sixhour
process. On a proportional basis this would
be equivalent to about 450 people attending a
Mission District-wide event.
For the first part of the workshop, Phil Erickson of
CD+A presented the agenda and an overview of
planning in the NEMIZ. He outlined four major
goals for the workshop:

in the NEMIZ. The workshop
drew a wide range of participants,
including residents,
workers, business owners, property
owners, plus community
and civic leaders from the
NEMIZ, the Mission, and San
Francisco at-large.
Achieve a NEMIZ-stakeholder-based
vision for the future.
Provide clarity about desired land uses.
Focus on achieving a consensus.
Participants were divided into groups of eight to
twelve participants, with several members of each
group from each of five categories: Property
Owners, Residents, Business Owners, Workers,
and Non-Profit Groups/Community Leaders. The
groups retired to breakout sessions that led to a
certain number of points of consensus amongst the
groups.
