An Alternative Future for the North East Mission Industrial Zone

The history of this neighborhood is almost as rich
as its future. Originally built along transportation
routes adjacent to Mission Creek, the community
grew up hosting a variety of light and heavy industrial
uses in the early part of the 20th century and
as was the case with many industrial areas of this
period, housing and retail uses were mixed in. The
area managed to simultaneously fold in large and
small industrial facilities while developing the
attributes of a mixed-use urban community. The
district held an important symbiotic role with its
immediate place in the Mission and with the City
of San Francisco and the Region.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Within the Mission District lies
an equally distinct mixed-use
neighborhood known presently
as the North East Mission
Industrial Zone. The industrial
designation belies the neighborhood’s
true character as a community
of residents, businesses,
workers, and artists.
