Henry Sparhurst, of Bermuda. She died Dec.<br />

Rev. Baalis Sanford, son cf Capt. Joseph,<br />

was born July 6, 1801, in BiTkley, .Mass.,<br />

and after acquiring his early ed;iiation in the<br />

district schools entered Brown Liiivcrsity, at<br />

Mary, Aug. 18, 1656; Susanna, July 31, 1658;<br />

married (second) April 11, 1663, Mary, daughter<br />

of Rev. Samuel Gorton, of Warwick, and<br />

widow of Peter Green. To this union were<br />

born: Mary, March 3, 1664; Eliphalet, Feb.<br />

20, 1666; John, June 18, 1672; and Samuel,<br />

Oct 5, 1677.<br />

(III) John Sanford, son of John and third<br />

of the name, was born June 18, 1672. He located<br />

in Taunton, tliat is Berkley, about 1713,<br />

on July 1st of which year he married Abigail<br />

Pitts, born 1689, daughter of Samuel Pitts, of<br />

ried Mary (or Mercy) Phillips (1727-1793).<br />

(V) Capt. Joseph Sanford, of Berkley,<br />

Mass., son of Lieut. George, was a patriot of the<br />

Revolution, serving in 1776 and 1777 in different<br />

organizations and enlisting in 1778 in<br />

the Continental army for a period of nine<br />

months "from the time of their arrival in Fish-<br />

kill," in Capt. Ebenezer Paul's (2d) company.<br />

Col. Edward Pope's (2d Bristol County) regiment<br />

; age seventeen years ; stature, five feet, ten<br />

inches ; complexion, dark ; hair, black ; residence<br />

Berkley. He died in 1634. He was a mason by<br />

trade and also engaged in farming, and now<br />

within the precincts of Fort Warren, in Boston<br />

harbor (where he was stationed for a time during<br />

the war) are a well and a chimney which<br />

show the quality of the work he turned out.<br />

in 1785 he married Eleanor Macomber, 1763-<br />

1845, of the seventh generation from Thomas<br />

Rogers, of the "Mayflower." Four of their<br />

sons were graduated from Brown University,<br />

all of whom became Congregational clergymen.<br />

These were: James, John, Enoch and Baalis.<br />

The third son, Alpheus, died in Taunton, June<br />
