the latter of Shrewsbuiy, wife of John Russell.<br />

Children : Hunmhrey, John R., Obediah (who<br />

married Ruth Slierman), Abraham (married<br />

Abigail Sherman), Timothy (married Pauline<br />

Stephens), Williams (married Elizabeth<br />

Tripp), George, Salley (married a Gifiord),<br />

Kate (married John Jenney) and Elizabeth<br />

(married Joseph Tripp).<br />

(VI) Humphrey Davis, son of Nicholas (8)<br />

and SaraJi (Williams) Davis, married Eunice<br />

Hathaway, and they had children as follows:<br />

Lois died unmarried; Hannah married Prince<br />

Sears; Humphrey, Jr., is mentioned below;<br />

Nancy married Prince Sears (his second wife) ;<br />

Rebecca married Ira Leband, a Baptist min-<br />

ister; Sarah married Joseph Shockley; George<br />

died uiimarried.<br />

(VII) Humphrey Davis, Jr., born Feb. 20,<br />

1798, at Long Plain, Mass., there made his<br />

home and died March 2, 1863. His wife died<br />

Dec. 2, 1886. On Dec. 20, 1820, he married<br />

Nabby Spooner, who was born Oct. 30, 1802,<br />

and they had a large family, born as follows:<br />

Nancy Vincent, Oct. 8, 1821 (died Feb. 11,<br />

1890); Elizabeth Rouncville, Sept. 3, 1823;<br />

HannaJi Church, April 16, 1825; Walter<br />

Spooner, March 16, 1827; Joshua Vincent,<br />

June 2, 1829 (died Nov. 20, 1893) ; Eunice<br />

Hathaway, March 30, 1831 ; Abbie Spooner,<br />

Nov. 5, 1833 (died April 12, 1873) ; Isaac Vincent,<br />

Nov. 15, 1835; Lois Akin, May 14, 1838<br />

(married James Edwin Blake, of New Bedford,<br />

and died May 25, 1906) ; Rebecca Leland, Jan.<br />

7, 1841; Sarah Forest, April, 1843; George<br />

Humphrey, Sept. 10, 1846 (died in 1893);<br />

Harriet Angeline, April 17, 1848.<br />

Pitts. The Pitts family, of which James<br />

Edwin Blake is a descendant on his mother's<br />

side, is an old and well-known one of Bristol<br />

county. Peter Pitts, the founder of this branch,<br />

settled in Taunton as early as 1643. He married<br />

about 1654 Mary Andrews, daughter of<br />

Henry Andrews and widow of William Hodges.<br />

He died in 1692-93. Children : Samuel, Mary,<br />

Sarah, Peter and Alice, and Ebenezer.<br />

Ebenezer Pitts, born in 1670, died Feb. 28,<br />

1735, in Dighton, Mass. He married Elizabeth<br />

Hoskins, daughter of John and Elizabeth<br />

(Knapp) Hoskins, and they had children:<br />

Elizabeth, born in 1700 (who married Joshua<br />

Philips); Sarah M., 1703; Mary. 1705; Hannah,<br />

1707; a daughter, July 3, 1709 (died in<br />

infancy); Mary, Nov. 15, 1712; George, Sept.<br />

15, 1715; Silence, March 14, 1718.<br />

George Pitts, son of Ebenezer, born Sept.<br />

15, 1715, married Elizabeth Brightman. Children:<br />

Ebenezer, born June 10, 1749 (died Oct.<br />

9, 1750); Elizabeth, Aug. 23, 1750; George,<br />

Aug. 5, 1752; Mary, June 26, 1754; Susannah<br />

and Silence, twins, June 15, 1756; Sarah, April<br />

4, 1760.<br />

Capt. George Pitts, son of George and Elizabeth<br />

(Brightman) Pitts, was born Aug. 5,<br />

1752, in Dighton, where he was a farmer and<br />

land owner. He enlisted in the Revolutionary<br />

war, his record being as follows : George Pitts,<br />

Dighton, private, Capt. Peter Pitts' company.<br />

Col. Timothy Walker's regiment, muster roll<br />

dated Aug. 1, 1775; enlisted May 2, 1775; service<br />

three months, six days. Also, company<br />

return dated Oct. 6, 1775. Also, order of<br />

bounty coat or its equivalent in money, dated<br />

Roxbury, Nov. 5, 1775. Capt. George Pitts<br />

married Lydia Stetson, of Scituate, Mass., banspublished<br />

in Dighton June 3, 1780. She was<br />

a daughter of Ebenezer Stetson, of Scituate.<br />

Children: George, born Feb. 21, 1782; Lydia,<br />

April 11, 1784; Thomas Stetson, AprU 5, 1786;<br />

John, Aug. 28, 1788 (was drowned in the<br />

James river, Virginia, July 23, 1816) ; Elizabeth,<br />

Sept. 25, 1791; Joseph, July 14, 1794;<br />

Sarah, Sept. 12, 1798; Hannah, Aug. 9, 1802<br />

(died Aug. 30, 1808). The father of this fam-<br />

ily died Aug. 31, 1838, in Dighton.<br />

Sarah Pitts, daughter of Capt. George Pitts,,<br />

born at Dighton, Mass., Sept. 12, 1798, married<br />

(intentions published in Dighton, July 5, 1823)<br />

ALLEN PHELPS KEITH, superintendent<br />

of the public schools of New Bedford, and well<br />

known as an educator throughout this section<br />

of Massachusetts, is a direct descendant of the<br />

Rev. James Keith, a Scotchman, who was the<br />

first minister of Bridgewater.<br />

(I) Rev. James Keith was educated at Aberdeen,<br />

Scotland, and came to America in 1662,<br />

locating at West Bridgewater. He was then<br />

eighteen years old. He was ordained in Feb-<br />

ruary, 1664, and died July 23, 1719. He<br />

married Susanna Edson, daughter of Samuel<br />

Edson, and they had children as follows:<br />

James, Joseph, Samuel, Timothy, John, Josiah,<br />

Margaret, Mary and Susanna. The Rev.<br />

Mr. Keith married (second) in 1707 Mary<br />

Williams, widow of Thomas Williams, of<br />

Taunton.<br />

(II) John Keith, son of Rev. James, married<br />

in 1711 Hannah Washburn, daughter of<br />

Samuel Washburn, and they lived in Bridgewater.<br />

He died there in 1761, and she in 1766.<br />
