(V) Robert Sylvester, baptized Aug. 9,<br />
1772, died Aug. 17, 1807. He built the house<br />
in which William Dawes now resides and occupied<br />
it until his father's decease, when he tore<br />
down the old family homestead, replacing it<br />
with the house in which his son Robert lived.<br />
On Nov. 8, 1796, he married Lucy Bailey,<br />
daughter of George and Rebecca (Ellis)<br />
Bailey, of Hanover, born in 1781, died Oct. 7,<br />
1840. Children: Lucy, born Sept. 1, 1797,<br />
married July 29, 1821, William Church; Rebecca<br />
E., born Nov. 27, 1799, died Dec. 1,<br />
1847 (she married Dec. 15, 1819, Benjamin C.<br />
Pratt) ; Michael was bom May 5, 1802; Robert<br />
was born Oct. 19, 1805; Sarah E., born<br />
March 21, 1808, married Dec. 14, 1828, Samuel<br />
S. Church, and died Dec. 28, 1850.<br />
(VI) Robert Sylvester (2), born Oct. 19,<br />
1805, received his education in the district<br />
schools of Hanover, leaving school at the age<br />
of fifteen. He learned the trade of ship joiner<br />
and carpenter, serving his apprenticeship on<br />
the North river, in the town of Hanover, and<br />
in the town of Hingham. After giving up<br />
this kind of work he devoted all his time to<br />
his fann, which comprised 160 acres of land,<br />
all well cultivated. He carried on general<br />
farming, but made a specialty of hay and<br />
grain and garden truck. He was active in<br />
local politics as a Republican and served the<br />
community as road surveyor and member of<br />
the school committee. He was an orthodo.x<br />
church member. He died in March, 1899, in<br />
Hanover.<br />
On Nov. 28, 1828, Mr. Sylvester married<br />
Sarah W. Burgess, who was born in August,<br />
1807, daughter of Loammi Burgess, of Harvard,<br />
Mass., and died No- 9, 1855. To this<br />
union came the following i-hildren, all born<br />
in Hanover: (1) Loammi ;, born March 18,<br />
1832, was injured in the batiie o' Cedar Mountain<br />
and died shortly afterward. He marrieii<br />
Emeline (Pratt) Bartlett, a widow, and had<br />
one child, Sarah, who married William P.<br />
Steams and now resides in Wayland, Mass.<br />
(2) Susanna F., be n April 5, 1834, married<br />
William T. Lapham, of Norwell, and had William<br />
and George, who reside in Ashmont,<br />
Mass. (3) Belcher, born May 26, 1837, died<br />
July 2, 1838. (4) Elizabeth B., born July<br />
5, 1839, married Israel H. Macomber, of<br />
Marshfield, and had Herbert I. and Walter S.,<br />
the latter of whom died young. (5) Sarah<br />
E., born Sept. 1, 1843, married Nov. 9, 1864,<br />
George H. Allen, son of Zenas and Caroline<br />
(Randall) Allen, of Boston, and they have<br />
three children: Fannie, born Aug. 13, 1869;<br />
Sadie, Sept. 17^ 1871 ; and Grace B., in June,<br />
1874. (6) Juletta S., bom April 14, 1845,<br />
married Frank A. Clapp, of Norwell, and had<br />
Annie May and Carrie, who reside in Wakefield,<br />
Mass. (7) Robert is the youngest of<br />
the family.<br />
(VII) Robert Sylvester (3), bom June<br />
20, 1847, in Hanover, Mass., b&gan his education<br />
there in the district schools, later attend-<br />
ing Hanover Academy and the Assinippi Institute.<br />
For a few years he acted as depot master<br />
for the New York, New Haven & Hartford<br />
Railway Company<br />
and then went into the<br />
grain business in partnership with Mr. Church,<br />
under the firm name of Sylvester & Church,<br />
when he was twenty-two years old. He devoted<br />
most of Ms energies to his and his father's<br />
farms, engaging extensively in truck gardening,<br />
and at the time of his father's death the<br />
latter's farm, nearly 140 acres, was turned<br />
over to him. His property is laid out as well<br />
as any in this section and he is considered one<br />
of the most intelligent farmers of the vicinity,<br />
his work showing excellent results. Like<br />
all of his familj', he is a good <strong>citizen</strong> as well as<br />
an able business man. However, he has given<br />
little time to public affairs.<br />
On Nov. 22, 1868, Mr. Sylvester married<br />
Mary Bailey Turner, daughter of Elijah B.<br />
and Lucy (Standish) Turner, and they had<br />
one child, Robert B., born April 10, 1871, who<br />
died Jan. 30, 1896, in New York. Mr. Sylvester<br />
is a Republican in politics. He belongs<br />
to the Masonic fraternity, being a member of<br />
Phoenix Lodge at Hanover, and is an orthodox<br />
church member.<br />
Turner. (I) Humphrey Turner, according<br />
to Deane, arrived in Plymouth in 1628, and<br />
had a house lot assigned him in 1629, upon<br />
which he built a house in which he resided<br />
some years. It is a family tradition that he<br />
came from Essex in England. In 1633 he had<br />
another house lot on Kent street. In 1636 he<br />
had eighty acres at the place known in more<br />
recent years as Union Bridge on the west side<br />
of North river, which land for generations remained<br />
in the possession of his descendants.
