society for a number of years.<br />

Mr. Caldwell is a member of Fletcher Web-<br />

ster Post, No. 13, G. A. R., of Brockton,<br />

and was one of the organizers of the Cunningham<br />

Rifles, Company I, which is a part of the<br />

Massachusetts volunteer militia, and of which<br />

he served as first lieutenant fo;;^ several years.<br />

He was also a charter member of the Commercial<br />

Club, of which he has served as director,<br />

member of the house committee and<br />

first vice ; president a charter member of Banner<br />

Lodge, No. 81, New England Order of<br />

Protection, and is a member of the Brockton<br />

Country Club. He was one of the originators<br />

of the Brockton Agricultural Society in 1874,<br />

and has taken an active interest in the affairs<br />

of the society ever since, having served for a<br />

number of years as director and one of the<br />

"vice presidents of the same. He is also one of<br />

the incorporators of the Brockton Savings<br />

Bank, and was one of the petitioners for the<br />

original horse car railroad in Brockton. Mr.<br />

Caldwell has traveled extensively, having visited<br />

California (via New Orleans) as a member<br />

of the first excursion conducted by Raymond<br />

& Whitcomb. He has also visited Mexico and<br />

Cuba, and has spent the winters in Florida<br />

for the past twenty-three years.<br />

On June 27, 1867, Mr. Caldwell was united<br />

in marriage to Emma Maria Fairbanks, adopted<br />

daughter of Eliab and Harriet Souther (Packard<br />

) Whitman, of Brockton. To Mr. and Mrs.<br />

Caldwell have been born two sons, as follows :<br />

(1) Arthur Fairbanks, born June 22, 1870,<br />

who graduated at the Highland Military<br />

Academy, of Worcester, is engaged as a traveling<br />

salesman he married Annie Niles ;<br />

Porter,<br />

of Brockton, and they have had children—<br />

Mildred Porter, Arthur Wliitman (who died<br />

in infancy), Phillis Louise, Rudolph Winston,<br />

Natalie May, Gloria J. and Charles Benjamin<br />

Caldwell. (2) Harry Souther, born<br />

May 25, 187.5, graduated from the Brockton<br />

high school and from Bryant & Stratton's business<br />

college, Boston, and was in the employ of<br />

Howard & Caldwell; he married May Torrey,<br />

of Rockland, Mass. He died June 12, 1911,<br />

aged thirty-six years.<br />

Mr. Caldwell is one of the substantial and<br />

enterprising business men of Brockton, always<br />

ready to give freely of his means and time to<br />

any project which has for its object the betterment<br />

of his native city. He enjoys the acquaintance<br />

of a large circle of stanch friends,<br />

and is held in high esteem by all who know<br />

him, both at home and wherever else he is<br />

known.<br />

:MARCUS HALL HOWES, postmaster at<br />

Barnstable, Barnstable Co., Mass., is a native<br />

of Plymouth county, Mass., born at Brockton,<br />

March 28, 1881, son of Zebina and Louisa (Kelley)<br />

Howes.<br />

The Howes family is of English origin, the<br />

first of the name in New England being (I)<br />

Thomas Howes, who with his wife Mary (Burr)<br />

came from England about the year 1637, and<br />

settled at Nobscussett, in Yarmouth, in March<br />

1639. He died in 1665, aged seventy-five years.<br />

Children : Joseph, born in England, who married<br />

Elizabeth Mayo, and died Jan. 19, 1694-<br />

95; Thomas; and Jeremiah, born on passage<br />

over, who married Sarah Prince, and died Jan.<br />

5, 1705-06.<br />

(II) Thomas Howes (2), son of Thomas,<br />

born in 1636, in England, came over with<br />

his parents and settled in Yarmouth. His<br />

death occurred Nov. 20, 1676. He married<br />

Sarah Bangs in 1656, and their children were:<br />

Rebecca, born in December, 1657; Thomas,<br />

May 2, 1663; Jonathan, Feb. 25, 1669; Sarah,<br />

Oct. 29, 1673 (married Feb. 12, 1708, Daniel<br />

Sears).<br />

(III) Jonathan Howes, son of Thomas (2),<br />

was born Feb. 25, 1669, at Yarmouth. His<br />

wife's name was Sarah. His death occurred<br />

Jan. 5, 1750-51. His children were: Sarah,<br />

born June 30, 1695, married Peter Paddock<br />

March 16. 1720; David, born April 30, 1698,<br />

married Feb. 27, 1720, Hannah Paddock;<br />

Jonathan, born April 2, 1701, was killed by a<br />

whale Jan. 10, 1718; Joshua, born Jan. 13,<br />

1704, married July 26, 1733, Eunice Allen;<br />

Thomas was born May 17, 1711.<br />

(IV) Thomas Howes, son of Jonathan, born<br />

May 17, 1711, married Oct. 20, 1737, Mercy<br />

Hedge, and their children were: Joshua, born<br />

July 12, 1738. married Dec. 2, 1763, Mercv<br />

Howes; Thankful, born July 7, 1740, died<br />

March 30, 1741; Thankful (2), born Nov. 1,<br />

174:3, married Jan. 12. 1769, Peter Sears;<br />

Thomas, born Feb. 27, 1745, is mentioned below;<br />

Mercv. born Mav 27, 1750, married John<br />

Hall, of Hebron. July 7, 1771.<br />

(V) Thomas Howes, son of Thomas, born<br />

Feb. 27, 1745, married June 17, 1773, Jerusha<br />

Howes. They had the following children:<br />

Eunice, born July 30. 1774 (married Jesse<br />

Hall); Joshua, Oct. 24, 1776 (married Lavinia<br />

Hall) : Thomas. April 11, 1779 (married<br />

Priscilla Hall and second Elizabeth Howes) ;<br />

.Terusha. Oct. 3, 1781 ; Mercy, March 14, 1783;<br />

Jonathan, Jan. 17, 1788; and Zebina, March<br />

22, 1792.<br />

(VI) Zebina Howes, son of Thomas, was<br />

born March 22, 1792. He married (first)
