having numerous connections of a purely social<br />
nature, being a member of Mount Vernon<br />
Lodge, A. F. & A. M., of Providence; a charter<br />
member of King Hiram Chapter, of Attleboro.<br />
Royal Arch Masons; Attleboro Council,<br />
Royal and Select Masters; Bristol Commandery,<br />
Knights Templar; a charter member of<br />
Hope Chapter, 0. E. S., a charter member of<br />
descendants for many generations were prominent.<br />
His burial is recorded in Rehoboth,<br />
Sept. 15, 1676. Mrs. Mason's death is recorded<br />
as having occurred Aug. 29, 1714.<br />
Their children were : Noah, Sampson, John<br />
(all born in Dorchester), Samuel, Sarah,.<br />
Mary, James, Joseph, Bethiah, Isaac, Pelatiah,.<br />
Benjamin and Thankful (all born in Rehoboth).<br />
(II) Benjamin Mason, born Oct. 20, 1670,<br />
in Rehoboth, Mass.,. married Ruth Rounds,,<br />
the Company C Association; a member of the<br />
Pomham Club, of Providence; a member of<br />
William A. Streeter Post, G. A. R., and a<br />
member of the Loyal Legion of Honor.<br />
In 1861 Mr. Wexel was married (first) in<br />
Xew York to Elizabeth Hudson, of New York,<br />
who lived only a short time thereafter; they<br />
had no children. On April 26, 1871, he married<br />
(second) Helen A. (Millard) Mason, a<br />
native of Saratoga, N. Y., daughter of James<br />
and Laura (Taylor) Millard and widow of<br />
Francis Asbury Mason, of Fall River, Mass.<br />
There was one child by this union, Serena<br />
Augusta, born April 10, 1872, who died young.<br />
Mrs. Wexel is a member of the M. E. Church,<br />
a stanch advocate of temperance and a prominent<br />
member in this section of the Woman's<br />
Christian Temperance Union, in the work of<br />
which organization she is particularly interested,<br />
though her sympathy includes all good<br />
causes, and she is known for her benevolence<br />
and kindness. She is a descendant of one of<br />
the earliest families of New England.<br />
MASON. (I) Sampson Mason, a soldier<br />
in Cromwell's army, came to America, where<br />
he first appears of record in July, 1649. He<br />
settled in Rehoboth and his posterity has been<br />
numerous. He seemingly was at Dorchester,<br />
where he purchased a house and lot in March,<br />
1650-51. He married Mary Butterworth,<br />
probably daughter of John Butterworth, of<br />
Weymouth. He sold his property in 1655-56<br />
and removed to Rehoboth, but Just at what<br />
time he came to the latter town has not been<br />
ascertained; perhaps not far from 1657-58.<br />
By this time he had acquired considerable<br />
property, and he here entered extensively into<br />
daughter<br />
the land speculations so common at that time.<br />
He appears as the holder of one share of the<br />
seventy-nine and one-half in the Rehoboth<br />
North Purchase, which afterward became the<br />
town of Attleboro, and also one of the proprietors<br />
of the town of Swansea, in which his<br />
of John Rounds, of Swansea. Mr.<br />
Mason was a farmer. He died in August or<br />
September, 1740. His wife passed away Oct.<br />
14, 1740. Their children, all- born in Swansea,<br />
were: Hannah, born May 11, 1698; Christopher,<br />
born July 6, 1702; Charles, born Aug.<br />
16, 1713.<br />
(III) Christopher Mason, born July 6^<br />
1702, in Swansea, Mass., married (first) June<br />
17, 1725, Lydia Jenckes, daughter of Joseph<br />
and Martha (Brown) Jenckes. He married<br />
(second) Nov. 10, 1757, Mrs. Sarah Luther,,<br />
widow of Theophilus Luther and formerly<br />
widow of Edward Cole, and daughter of<br />
Thomas and Hope (Huckins) Nelson. Shedied<br />
May 8, 1782, in her seventieth year. Mr.<br />
Mason died May 9, 1783. The children of<br />
Christopher and Lydia, all born in Swansea,<br />
were: Martha, born July 5, 1726; Ruth, Sept.<br />
21, 1728; Lydia, Nov. 8, 1730; Benjamin,<br />
Feb. 26, 1732-33; Joseph, Sept. 2, 1735;<br />
Esther (twin), Sept. 2, 1735; Christopher,<br />
Oct. 22, 1737; Catherine, June 13, 1741; and<br />
Edward, Jan. 26, 1760.<br />
(IV) Edward Mason, born Jan. 26, 1760,<br />
in Swansea, Mass., married July 19, 1782,<br />
Tamar Hale, born Dec. 6, 1760, daughter of<br />
John, and Bethiah (Bosworth) Hale. Mr.<br />
Mason died Sept. 5, 1792, and his widow married<br />
(second) James Luther. The children<br />
of Edward and Tamar, all born in Swansea,<br />
were: Christopher, born April 27, 1783; William,<br />
March 12, 1785; Edward, Aug. 9, 1786;<br />
Mary, Jan. 23, 1788; Anna, Sept. 7, 1789;<br />
John Hale, April 26, 1792.<br />
(V) Edward Mason (2), born Aug. 9, 1786,<br />
in Swansea, Mass., man-ied (intentions recorded<br />
Nov. 14, 1812, in Rehoboth, Mass.)<br />
Mahala Anthony. His will was dated Feb.<br />
22, 1845, at which time his wife was alive.<br />
Their children were: Edward Nelson, born<br />
Dec. 21, 1813; Mary Anna Hale, Sept. 9,<br />
1815; Elizabeth Carpenter, Dec. 29, 1818;<br />
William Henry, July 19, 1820; John Wesley,<br />
May 9, 1823; John Wesley (2), Aug. 25, 1827<br />
(all bom in Rehoboth) ; and Francis Asbury,<br />
June 26, 1831 (born in Fall River, Massa-<br />
chusetts).<br />
(VI) Francis Asbury Mason, son of Edward<br />
(2), was bom June 26, 1831, in Fall<br />
River, Mass., where his father was engaged in<br />
