Sears, born Nov. 22, 1862, married Jennie<br />

Philips, and resides in Exeter, N. H.;<br />

Bangs Kelley, born Nov. 22, 1865, married<br />

Luella Chase, and resides in Barnstable; Mary<br />

Louise, born Sept. 12, 1869, died Oct. 6, 1870;<br />

Sophia May, born April 26, 1871, married W.<br />

E. Dunham, and resides in Neponset, Mass.;<br />

Zebina Horton, born Nov. 3, 1873, is owner<br />

jind operator of a gold mine in Wadsworth,<br />

Washoe Co., Xev.; Susan, born July 12, 1876,<br />

is her brother's assistant in the post office at<br />

Barnstable; Marcus Hall was born March 28,<br />

1881.<br />

(VIII) Marcus Hall Howes was born March<br />

28, 1881, and was educated in Barnstable. He<br />

studied law for some time and in 1902 received<br />

the appointment of postmaster of Barnstable<br />

from President Eoosevelt. This position he<br />

has since filled with efficiency and general satisfaction.<br />

He is a stanch Republican and a<br />

member of the Republican town committee.<br />

On Sept. 30, 1909, he married Ethel B.,<br />

^laughter of Smith and Mary Hopkins.<br />

WILLIAM BAKER WINSLOW,<br />

SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS 1111<br />

in his<br />

lifetime a well known <strong>citizen</strong> of New Bedford,<br />

was bom in the town of Dartmouth June 15,<br />

1815, a member of one of the very old New<br />

England families.<br />

(I) Kenelm Winslow, son of Edward and<br />

Magdalene (Ollyver) Winslow, of Droitwitch,<br />

Worcestershire, England, born there April 29,<br />

1599, came to Plymouth, probably in 1629.<br />

with his brother .Josiah, and was admitted a<br />

freeman Jan. 1, 1632-33. In 1641 he removed<br />

to Marshfield, ha\'ing previously received a<br />

grant of land there. He was one of the twentysix<br />

original proprietors of Assonet (Free-<br />

town), Mass., in 1659. He was deputy or representative<br />

to the General Court, 1642-44, and<br />

1649-53, eight years. In June, 1634, he married<br />

Eleanor, widow of John Adams, of Plymouth,<br />

and died Sept. 13, 1672, at Salem,<br />

Mass.. whither he had gone on business. She<br />

survived him, and died at Marshfield, where<br />

she was buried Dec. 5, 1681. Their children<br />

were: Kenelm, Ellen, Eleanor, Nathaniel and<br />

Job.<br />

(II) Lieut. Job Winslow, son of Kenelm,<br />

born about 1641, settled about 1666 at Swan-<br />

sea, where at the breaking out of King Philip's<br />

war, in 1675, his house was burned. He was in<br />

Rochester about 1680, but soon removed to<br />

Freetown, where he was selectman in 1686,<br />

town clerk in 1690, assessor in 1691, 1701-<br />

07 and 1711. He was deputy to the General<br />

Court in 1686, and representative in 1692, at<br />

the first General Court in Massachusetts,<br />

under the charter of William and Mary. He<br />

died July 14, 1720, his wife Ruth surviving<br />

him. His children were (births of the first<br />

six of Swansea record) : William, Oliver, Ruth,<br />

Richard, Hope, Job, Joseph, James, Mary,<br />

George, Jonathan, John and Elizabeth.<br />

(III) Jonathan Winslow, born Nov. 22,<br />

1692, in Freetown, Mass., married Nov. 25,<br />

1722, Sarah Kirby, probably of Dartmouth,<br />

and their children (all recorded in Freetown)<br />

were: Rebecca, born Aug. 26, 1723 (died Dec.<br />

18, 1731); Jonathan, Nov. 22, 1725; John,<br />

Nov. 32, 1725; Thomas, July 5, 1729; Sarah,<br />

July 19, 1731; Nathaniel, May 20, 1733;<br />

Ruth, Feb. 1, 1735-36; Reuben, May 6, 1738;<br />

Benjamin, Feb. 14, 1740-41; Hannah, Feb. 14,<br />

1743-44; Hopestill, February, 1743-44.<br />

(IV) Benjamin Winslow, born Feb. 14,<br />

1740-41, in Freetown, Mass., married (intentions<br />

published Nov. 6, 1767) Content Webster<br />

(a relative of Daniel Webster). Their<br />

children were : Sarah married Zebedee Tallman<br />

; Benjamin married Annie Cook Nichols,<br />

and (second) Henrietta Nevins, of Assonet,<br />

Mass.; Hallet Mitchell, bom in June, 1775,<br />

married in 1806 Sarah Maxwell ; Jonathan was<br />

born Nov. 17, 1779 ; Anpie married Thomas<br />

Williams; Molly; Hudson, born in 1785, is<br />

the next in this line.<br />

(V) Hudson Winslow, born in 1785, in<br />

Dartmouth, Mass., married in 1810 Phebe,<br />

born Feb. 1, 1792, daughter of William and<br />

Mercy Baker, of Dartmouth. She died March<br />

11, 1845, in Dartmouth, and was buried there.<br />

Mr. Winslow, who was a mariner, was drowned<br />

from the sloop "Lively" of Dartmouth, in<br />

September, 1826, while on a voyage to Savannah,<br />

Ga. Their children were: Hallet Mitchell,<br />

born June 21, 1812, in Dartmouth, married<br />

(first) Mary A. Clarke, and (second)<br />

Sarah Beden; William Baker, born June 15,<br />

1815, in Dartmouth, Mass., is mentioned below;<br />

Joshua Baker, bom April 8, 1817, in<br />

Dartmouth, Mass., married Mary Dehart<br />

Bruen, of Newark, N. J.; Phebe, born in 1818,<br />

died in infancy; James Smith, born Dec. 1,
