(V) Abraham Shaw, son of Joseph, bom<br />

Sept. 8, 1720, married Jan. 26, 1741-42,<br />

Joanna Hunt, born Sept. 25, 1722, daughter<br />

of Thomas Hunt, of Weymouth, and his wife<br />

Elizabeth (Reed), granddaughter of Ephraim<br />

Hunt and his wife Joanna (Alcock), great-<br />

^anddaughter of Ephraim Hunt and Anna<br />

(Richards) and great-great-granddaughter of<br />

Enoch Hunt, one of the first settlers of Wey-<br />

mouth. The children of Abraham and Joanna<br />

(Hunt) Shaw of Weymouth town record were:<br />

Joanna, born Oct. 24, 1742 ; and Abraham,<br />

born Dec. 17, 1744.<br />

(V'l) Capt. Abraham Shaw, of Weymouth<br />

and East Abington, son of Abraham and<br />

Joanna (Hunt) Shaw, born Dec. 17, 1744, in<br />

and his wife Sarah (Ripley), Jeremiah Beal<br />

(2) and his wife Hannah (Lane) and Jeremiah<br />

Beal (3) and his wife Esther (Farrow) ;<br />

the third Jeremiah removed from Hingham to<br />

Weymouth, and the fourtii Jeremiah, wlio had<br />

removed there with him, settled about 1731<br />

in Abington.<br />

Abraham and Priscilla (Beal) Shaw had<br />

children as follows: Abraham, born Jan. 14,<br />

1766; Jeremiah, June 18, 1767; Nathaniel,<br />

Aug. 5, 1769; Daniel, Oct. 16, 1771; Priscilla,<br />

Oct. 17, 1773 (died Sept. 4, 1775) : Bracklev,<br />

April 12, 1775; Oliver, Nov. 19, 1777; Pri.sse,<br />

Dec. 24, 1780; Polly, Dec. 20, 1785; Nancy,<br />

July 2, 1786: Chloe, May 6, 1788.<br />

(VII) Brackley Shaw, son of Abraham<br />

and Priscilla (Beal) Shaw, was bom in the<br />

town of Abington April 12, 1775, and married<br />

Betsey Porter, who was a native of New<br />

Hampshire. Children : Betsey, born Aug. 12,<br />

1798 (married Capt. Melvin Shaw) ; Dorinda,<br />

May 21, 1803 (married Capt. Melvin Shaw,<br />

her deceased sister's husband) ; Brackley, July<br />

1, 1805; Edmund, Aug. 2, 1807; Louisa, Aug.<br />

16, 1810 (married Daniel Blanchard) ; Micah<br />

P., April, 1813 (died Oct. 6, 1867) ; Priscilla<br />

Beal, July 2, 1816; Philander, Feb. 28, 1818;<br />

Sumner, March 28, 1821 (married Hannah<br />

Smith Hunt).<br />

LEMUEL LeBARON DEXTER, wellknown<br />

attorney at law of New Bedford, with<br />

offices in the Masonic building, and his home<br />

in Mattapoisett, Plymouth Co., Mass., was<br />

bom Dec. 22, 1872,<br />

in the town of Mattapoisett,<br />

the only son of Elisha Loring and<br />

Harriet W. (LeBaron) Dexter.<br />

The Dexter family was planted in America<br />

by (I) Thomas Dexter, a native of England,<br />

who settled in Lynn, Mass., at an early period.<br />

He was a man of education and a good writer.<br />

He was the owner of about eight hundred acres<br />

of land in Lynn, and was known as Farmer<br />

Dexter. He was energetic and enterprising,<br />

and built a mill neaf the Saugus river. He<br />

moved to the town of Sandwich, Barnstable<br />

county, where in 1637 he built the first gristmill.<br />

Returning to Lynn he remained thei-e<br />

Weymouth, married April 16, 1765, Priscilla,<br />

born in 1746, in until 1646, when he bought a tract of land in<br />

Barnstable, settling there. Later he moved to<br />

Boston, spending<br />

Abington, daughter of Jeremiah<br />

Beal and his wife Mary (Colson), he a<br />

direct descendant of John Beal, who came<br />

from Hingham, County of Norfolk, England,<br />

in 1635, and settled in Hingham, Mass., from<br />

whom his descent is through Jeremiah Beal<br />

his latter days with his<br />

daughter, Mrs. Captain Oliver, and dying at<br />

her house in 1677. He was buried in the<br />

Oliver tomb, in King's Chapel burying ground.<br />

His children were : Thomas, who married<br />

Elizal)eth Vincent in 1648; William, who married<br />

Sarah Vincent in 1653; Mary, who mar-<br />

ried (first) John French and (second) Capt.<br />

James Oliver, of Boston; and James, who married<br />

Rachel Wood.<br />

(II) William Dexter, son of Thomas, settled<br />

in Barnstable in 1650, on one of his father's<br />

farms. In 1679 he moved to t\\e town of<br />

Rochester, Plymouth county, where he became<br />

a large land owner. He also had landed interests<br />

in Barnstable. He died in 1684. In<br />

January, 1653, he married Sarah Vincent, and<br />

tlieir children were: Mary, born in January,<br />

1654 (married Moses Barlow) ; Stephen, May,<br />

1657 ; Philip, September, 1659 ; James, May,<br />

1662 (died July 15, 1694) ; Thomas, July,<br />

1665; John, August, 1668; and Benjamin,<br />

Feb. 16, 1670.<br />

(III) Philip Dexter, son of William, was<br />

born in the town of Barnstable, Mass., in September,<br />

1659. He settled in the town .of Falmouth,<br />

Mass., where he was a landholder. He<br />

also owned and operated a mill. He was quite
