late Henry H. Rogers), the Training school in<br />

connection with the normal at Hyannis, Mass.,<br />

and the high school at New Bedford, costing<br />

nearly $500,000, all of which are modern<br />

structures, and a credit to the builders.<br />

During the Civil war, although but fifteen<br />

years of age at the time, Mr. Howard enlisted,<br />

in July, 1864, in Company F, 6th<br />

Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, at Read-<br />

ville, Mass., for one hundred days, and was<br />

mustered out at Fort Delaware. He is a member<br />

of Fletcher Webster Post, No. 13, G. A. R.,<br />

Brockton.<br />

Politically Mr. Howard is a firm believer in<br />

the principles of the Republican party, but<br />

being domestic in his tastes and of a retiring<br />

disposition, he has never cared for or sought<br />

public office. Socially he is a member of the<br />

Commercial Club, of Brockton, where he<br />

spends an occasional evening among his<br />

friends.<br />

On Sept. 18, 1872, Mr. Howard married<br />

Alice M. Clough, daughter of Columbus and<br />

Ann M. (Cushman) Clough, of Brockton, and<br />

a direct descendant of Robert Cushman. To<br />

Mr. and Mrs. Howard have been born children<br />

as follows:<br />

(1) Harry Clough Howard was born<br />

April 23, 1877, in Brockton, and after attending<br />

the public schools of his native city entered<br />

Bryant & Stratton's business college, of Boston,<br />

from which he was graduated. Upon<br />

leaving school he became apprenticed to the<br />

brickmason's trade under his father, and after<br />

completing his apprenticeship continued in the<br />

employ of his father until 1905, when, upon<br />

he was made treasurer of the<br />

same, and has since continued an active member<br />

of the corporation, he having had charge<br />

of the construction of many of the large buildings<br />

which this well known contracting concern<br />

has since erected.<br />

In political faith Mr. Howard is a Republican,<br />

and since reaching his majority has taken<br />

an active interest in the public atfairs of his<br />

native city. In 1908 and 1909 he served as a<br />

member of the board of aldermen from Ward<br />

Two, and during his service on that board was<br />

chairman of the committees on Highways,<br />

Public Property, Fire and Building, and a<br />

member of the committees on Street Railways<br />

and on Police ; and during his last year was<br />

chairman of the board. In 1910 he was the<br />

choice of his party for the nomination of<br />

mayor of the city, and at the election in December<br />

following was elected chief executive<br />

hff a substantial majority, serving in that<br />

capacity during the year 1911, during which<br />

year, as mayor, he was also president ex-officio<br />

of the school board of the city.<br />

Socially,<br />

Mr. Howard is a member of the<br />

Commercial Club, of Brockton, and also holds<br />

membership in Damocles Lodge, No. 16,<br />

Ivnights of Pythias.<br />

On May 4, 1898, Mr. Howard was united<br />

in marriage to Alice G. Carver, of Brockton,<br />

and to this union was born one son, George<br />

Marston, who died at the age of three years.<br />

(2) Preston Wilbar Howard, born Jan. 6,<br />

1882, in Brockton, was educated in the Brockton<br />

public schools, and in 1903 was graduated<br />

from Dartmouth College, since which time he<br />

has been associated with his father in the<br />

contracting business. Upon the incorporation<br />

of the business, in 1905, he became secretary<br />

of the same. On Sept. 28, 1910, he married<br />

Henrietta Jane Williamson, daughter of ex-<br />

Mayor Charles Williamson, of Brockton.<br />

(3) Ruby May Howard was born March 16,<br />

1883, and "died Aug. 22, 1883.<br />

Mr. and Mrs. Howard attend the Unitarian<br />

Church, and are liberal in their support of<br />

charitable and benevolent projects. Mr. Howard<br />

is honorable and upright in his dealings<br />

with his fellowmen, and enjoys the respect and<br />

esteem of all who know him. Mrs. Howard<br />

is a member of Deborah Sampson Chapter,<br />

Daughters of the American Revolution, her<br />

eligibility being through the Cushman line.<br />

Cushman. The Cushman family to which<br />

Mrs. George Howard belongs is descended<br />

from (I) Robert Cushman, one of the most<br />

active and influential men in the movement<br />

which took the Pilgrims to Holland, and in<br />

the preparation for their removal to America.<br />

He himself came over in 1621, bringing with<br />

him his young son Thomas. He returned in a<br />

short time, leaving Thomas in the care of Governor<br />

Bradford. Robert Cushman died in<br />

England in 1626.<br />

(II) Elder Thomas Cushman, son of Robert,<br />

came to New England in 1621 with his<br />

father. He was later of Plympton. He married<br />

Ruib;-(iajigbter of John iJQHrl«ftd^.r)f the<br />

"Mayflower."<br />

(III) Benjamin Cushman, son of Elder<br />

Thomas, was of Plympton. He married Sarah<br />

Eaton.<br />

(IV) Benjamin Cushman (2), son of Benjamin,<br />

was also of Plympton. He married<br />

Zurinah Sampson.<br />

(V) Jacob Cushman, of Plympton, son of<br />

Benjamin (2), married Sylvia Sampson,
