Toscana Promozione is organizing ‘Selection of Tuscan Wines’, a prestigious competition now at its
9th edition. It identifi es and demonstrates the quality of the fi nest labels of Tuscan wine production
by submitting them to a qualifi ed jury which chooses from the hundreds of labels presented by the
producers, who have free and unlimited access to the competition. Authorized by the Ministry of Agricultural,
Alimentary and Forestry Policies, the initiative is organized by Toscana Promozione in collaboration
with Enoteca Italiana of Siena, Associazione Enologi Enotecnici Italiani, the protecting Consortiums, the
Provinces and Chambers of Commerce of Tuscany and ICE, the Institute for Foreign Trade.
The aim of the competition is to select and give awards to the best Tuscan wines, divided by category
and price level, in order to bring them to the attention of international operators of the sector (from
buyers to importers, purchasing offi cials of HoReCa, opinion makers, experts in oenology and the
specialized press) through the creation of a bouquet of excellence. A selection of wines with important,
high quality names, but also brands and productions that are less famous, but of superior
level, as well as the surprises and novelties that buyers can include in their own ‘wine lists’.
OENOLOGICAL EXCELLENCE
In order to guarantee the quality of its choice, the competition adopts the strict methods of the Union
International des Oenologues, a decision which enables the competing wines to be assessed impartially
without knowledge of their label. Organization of the competition is managed by Enoteca Italiana
of Siena, while the Tuscan Delegation of AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommelier) will collect the samples
from the wine-cellars. Selection is overseen by 77 jurors (11 commissions, each with 7 members) consisting
of oenologists, sommeliers and journalists of the sector. All wines achieving a mark of at least 82/100 at
the ‘Selection’ phase receive a Diploma and are added to the initiative’s database. Wines achieving more than
85/100 obtain a Special Mention while the fi ve best wines of each category are awarded a special Diploma of Honour.
Selection takes places in Siena (19-22 November 2010) at the Hotel Garden and will be attended only by the
jurors and organizers of the competition, who will taste all the wines submitted and admitted to the competition.
THE LIST OF WINNERS
The competition is a tool for promoting excellence, with
a publication in Italian and English. An on-line site, available
from January 2011, will give full information on the companies
and the features of the selected labels. An important reference
work to encourage new opportunities for contact, national
and international, and to help the Tuscan top-class
wine & gastronomy market to develop.
