Complete Software Reinstallation Partial Reinstallation of the Software Many software components are modular in nature. They can be reloaded and the applications can be restarted. The media to perform partial reinstallations is shipped with the system. Some configuration information cannot be restored without difficulty. Therefore, it is suggested that you do the following: • Create a Windows emergency diskette as soon as the system is stable. • Back up customer data files to tape on a regular basis. • Mirror disks, or use a RAID configuration whenever possible. • Do not lose the Administrator password, and do not allow unauthorized persons access to it. Some software is periodically updated. To install a new release, the cover letter might refer you to the information in this section. Reinstalling the Windows Operating System To reinstall the Windows operating system, refer to the Quick Installation Guide, and under the “Installing Your Operating System” topic, perform the steps to install an operating system. Configuring the Windows Operating System Complete Software Reinstallation Set the performance and file dump options on the Windows operating system by performing the following steps: 1. On the desktop, click Start, select Settings, select Control Panel, and then click System. The System Properties dialog box appears. 2. Select the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog box. 3. In the Performance box, select Settings. The Performance Options dialog box appears. 4. Select the Advanced tab on the Performance Options dialog box. 5. In the Virtual memory box, click Change. The Virtual Memory dialog box appears. 6. Select the C: drive. 7. Select Custom size. 8. Add 32 MB to the amount of total physical memory (RAM) available on your system, and enter that combined value, in megabtyes, in both the Initial size and Maximum size fields. If the combined value exceeds 4095 MB, enter 4095 MB in the size fields. Note: You can view the total physical memory available on your system on the System Information screen. On your desktop, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click System Information. 9. Click OK to close the Virtual Memory dialog box. 10. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box. 11. Click OK on the System Properties dialog box. 12. Click Yes to Do you want to restart your computer now? Virtual Machine for ClearPath MCP Software If you perform a complete reinstallation of Windows, you must reinstall the Virtual Machine for ClearPath MCP software. The troubleshooting information in Section 4 of this document tells you when to reinstall the Virtual Machine for ClearPath MCP software.
