ins á grundvelli skipulagsuppdráttar þar sem gert var ráð<br />

fyrir að bærinn gæti vaxið á öldinni innan Hringbrautar sem<br />

umlukti byggðina.<br />

Þetta er fyrsta tilraun að aðalskipulagi fyrir Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k en<br />

skipulagið var aldrei formlega staðfest.<br />

Höfnin þróaðist og dafnaði, átti s<strong>í</strong>n erfiðu ár <strong>í</strong> kreppunni<br />

en varð mjög þýðingarmikil <strong>í</strong> s<strong>í</strong>ðari heimsstyrjöldinni. Höfnin<br />

var orðin l<strong>í</strong>fæð lands og borgar og Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k mesti togarabær<br />

landsins. Árið 1950 voru gerðir út 18 togarar frá Reykjav<strong>í</strong>kurhöfn<br />

auk 50 mótorbáta og hátt <strong>í</strong> 200 trilla.<br />

Og byggðin sjálf þandist út á sama t<strong>í</strong>ma og var búin að<br />

sprengja af sér Hringbrautina og <strong>í</strong>búðahverfi risu án heildarskipulags,<br />

sum langt frá kjarnabyggðinni - „byggðinni innan<br />

Hringbrautar”. Norðurmýrin lá að v<strong>í</strong>su þétt að mörkunum<br />

sem vel skipulagt hverfi en önnur hverfi byggðust með tilviljanakenndum<br />

hætti þar sem bærinn eignast jarðir eða<br />

landspildur. Má <strong>í</strong> þv<strong>í</strong> sambandi nefna: Bústaðahverfi, Laugarnes,<br />

Sund og Vogar. Hverfi risu á svæðum sem á gömlu<br />

dönsku kortunum var merkt “udmark eller græsgang”.<br />

Á str<strong>í</strong>ðsárunum var talsvert fjallað um skipulagsmál höfuðstaðarins<br />

og 1948 var lagður fram „Heildaruppdráttur að<br />

Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k, væntanleg þróun til ársins 1985”. Uppdrátturinn<br />

var ekki samþykktur formlega en á honum er <strong>í</strong> fyrsta sinn<br />

horft til Seltjarnarnessins <strong>í</strong> heild að Elliðaám og litið til fram-<br />

from there to other harbours with coastal vessels. This<br />

brought the harbour a lot of income in harbour fees and<br />

from services for ship arrivals. In a certain way, the harbour<br />

construction was the tipping point for Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k becoming<br />

the country’s capital.<br />

A comprehensive plan on the town’s development was<br />

approved in 1927, on the basis of a planning drawing providing<br />

for the town’s growth during the century inside<br />

Hringbraut, which encircled the settled area.<br />

This is the first attempt at a general plan for Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k,<br />

but it was never formally confirmed.<br />

The harbour developed and flourished, had some difficult<br />

years during the Depression, but became very significant<br />

in the Second World War. The harbour had become<br />

Iceland’s main commercial artery, and Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k became<br />

the biggest trawler town in the country. In 1950 18 trawlers<br />

were operated out of Reykjav<strong>í</strong>k Harbour, in addition to 50<br />

motor boats and nearly 200 small open motor boats.<br />

At the same time, the settled area swelled and burst out<br />

beyond Hringbraut, and residential areas sprang up without<br />

an overall plan, some of them far from the core settled area<br />

- “the settled area inside Hringbraut”. Nordurmýri was cer-<br />
