The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia<br />

Given that all three indictments deal with the role of the suspects at Srebrenica<br />

in the summer of 1995, the cases were joined together in May 2002.<br />

The new joint indictment alleges that the accused were part of a “joint<br />

criminal enterprise” which resulted in the genocidal execution of approximately<br />

7,000 male inhabitants of Srebrencia. 137<br />

Vinko Pandurevic<br />

The indictment against Vinko Pandurevic on charges of genocide, crimes<br />

against humanity, and war crimes was unsealed and revealed to the public<br />

on 7 December 2001. At the time of the Srebrenica massacre, Pandurevic<br />

was the commander of the Bosnian Serb Army unit known as the “Zvornik<br />

Brigade.” Units from his brigade were involved in the take-over of the<br />

safe area, and men under his command are alleged to have murdered<br />

hundreds of captured Muslim men. 138 At the time of writing, Pandurevic<br />

remains at large.<br />

Drago Nikolic, Vujadin Popovic, and Ljbisa Beara<br />

On 21 October 2002, indictments were unsealed and made public against<br />

three men who had all served as security offi cers for the Bosnian Serb<br />

Army. All three were charged with genocide, among other crimes.<br />

The indictment against Nikolic, who served as Chief of Security for the<br />

Zvornik Brigade, alleges that, by virtue of his position, he shared responsibility<br />

“…for all prisoners captured, detailed or killed within the Zvornik<br />

Brigade zone of responsibility...” 139 The Prosecutor also alleges that Nikolic<br />

was responsible for co-ordination with other units, including military police,<br />

who were involved in the massacres.<br />

Popovic, who served as Assistant Commander of Security for the Bosnian<br />

Serb Army’s Drina Corps, had duties similar to Nikolic’s and played an<br />
