This panel will determine the needed studies necessary to establish what are the common practices and corresponding recommendations and write a short report on this matter (report to EMSO Preparatory Phase). 4.3.1.2 Panel sessions Panel P2.1 – “Design comparison-Cabled observatories” led by Jaume Piera (UPC) and Jean Marvaldi (IFREMER). First case is the Snohvit gas field infrastructure where a cable connection is foreseen through a cooperation with Statoil. b) The second case is the KM3Net earth-sea science extension. Three ESONET sites are also KM3Net sites where neutrino telescope construction is planned. The final document of KM3Net must reflect this common interest. The panel worked on a preliminary version of the TDR (Technical Design <strong>Report</strong>) chapter on Earth-Sea science (author Univ. Aberdeen – KM3Net Design study WP9) and an IFREMER contribution dated September 2009. c) The experiments on cabled observatories have been limited during the first part of ESONET. That is why the Steering Committee decided to open a call for tests on cabled observatories. The testing areas range from coastal (OBSEA, Koljofjord) to deep sea (Antares, NEMO). As a general reflection on the plans for these experiments, the status of the proposals to the “Test Call” was reviewed. The group provided comments in order to improve the final program of the ESONET test experiments on cabled sites. <strong>Deliverable</strong> #50 - update October 2010 12
4.3.1.3 Debriefing - A document was issued as a contribution of ESONET to the KM3Net. See Annex D. - The technological tests to be performed by the “Test Call” merged proposal of ESONET were presented as a handout. This document was used for the meeting in Barcelona held by the coordinator to define a merged proposal. This work is reported in the <strong>Deliverable</strong> D58. - The case study on Snohvit would need more input from Statoil to provide recommendations from ESONET. 4.3.2 Design comparison – Stand alone observatories 4.3.2.1 Introductory text This panel benefits from the experience of previous and/ or running projects (Animate EuroSites/PAP, Var canyon, Pirata buoys,…) and Demonstration Missions of ESONET. It is assumed that on some sites, the stand alone observatories will be deployed to constitute a deep sea observatory infrastructure prior to cabled observatories. Among the topics of the panel: o General design issues (e.g. Rating of components, knock-down prevention, materiel in use, software, corrosion), o Protection of surface elements: Bio-Invasions (e.g. birds, mussels), Vandalism, Safety, o Data telemetry issues: underwater & surface ocean o Energy management, o Extension of deployment duration, o Deployment and maintenance procedures, o Implementation and exploitation costs, o On shore organization: remote sensor control, emergency interventions, o Synergy with other observatory components (e.g. AUV use for battery exchange, data retrieval). Two cost analysis have been performed inside ESONET WP5, one for stand alone winch observatories, established by AWI for the ARCTIC conditions, and another one for the stand alone acoustic observatories. Objectives: One objective is to identify the technical and cost related topics to be followed up specifically in the Demonstration Missions using stand-alone observatories and corresponding to communication. This panel will prepare a paper on common practices and give recommendations on technical implementations. 4.3.2.2 Panel sessions Panel P2.2 – “Design comparison-Stand alone observatories” led by Johannes Karstensen (KDM-IFM-GEOMAR) and Jérôme Blandin (IFREMER).
