Panel 1-1 : Physico-chemical sensors, Metrology

The previous Best Practice Workshop in Bremen led to the definition of the generic instrumentation in
ESONET (see <strong>Deliverable</strong> D6 - Session 4 - Scientific needs in regard to generic and specific
instrument packages - page 34). A report was issue by the project as <strong>Deliverable</strong> 13 - <strong>Report</strong> on
science modules, written by Henry Ruhl et al.
Bio fouling protection and calibration methods need to be discussed again in order to determine
additional tests or intercomparison workshops to be performed.
The list of sensors issued by the ESONET working group (D13) mentions two level of priorities: the
minimum list and an extended list.
This new meeting is intending to finalize the specifications of the "minimum list" and proceed in the
recommendations for the sensors of the extended list.
This session specifically addresses the qualification and deployment procedures of the individual
measuring system. Equipment testing complying with standards such as NFX 10-800 or similar must
be performed for the qualification. The group should propose a way to ensure that all qualification are
performed.

measuring system. The metrology necessary before and between each deployment will be discussed.
The metrology procedures must be related to the international standards and agreements of reference
laboratories, ensuring long term traceability and interoperability.
Objectives:
Prepare final specifications. Issue recommendations according to the recognized state of the art.
Recommend comparative tests and qualification tests. Evaluate costs for the purchase and operation of
these instruments.
It appears that this issue corresponds to an integrating activity inside Esonet which might last after the
end of the project as a service part the European infrastructure.
How could such a group continue its activities (training, qualification of new sensors ,metrology
reference, data treatment,...)?

Panel 1-2 : Acoustic sensors

Acoustic sensors like ADCP and sonar systems are forming the backbone for ocean science missions.
This session will focus on best practices developed within this context in particular in regard to signal
processing techniques and data verification strategies for acoustic systems. Although ADCPs are
based on a very straightforward measuring principle the data processing is quite intricate often leaving
scientific users in the role of simply applying predefined processing steps. A coherent approach on this
appears necessary so that users of the data can judge on the reliability of the collected data.
The following issues will be discussed during this session:
o Application of acoustic systems in different scenarios (ADCPs for currents and waves).
o Known issues of the instruments.
