Contribution of ESONET Best Practices Workshop 2 to the KM3Net from a version of the
TDR chapter on Earth-Sea science (author Univ. Aberdeen – KM3Net Design study WP9)
and an IFREMER contribution dated September 2009.
What is devoted to Astrophysics infrastructure and what is devoted to Earth-sea
science infrastructure?
From an earth-sea science point of view (as represented in Europe by the ESONET Network
of Excellence and the EMSO infrastructure project), the segments of the network of KM3Net
used for their community are complying with the component definition and functional
definition of ESONET.
The “piggy back” relation with the telescope infrastructure must be an advantage for the
whole scientific community.
The list of functions of an ESONET EMSO subsea observatory will be either shared with
KM3Net telescope (Shared/Telescope) or ensured by the KM3Net telescope (telescope) or
specific to the Earth-Sea science segments (Specific):
A – Implement subsea instruments from any scientific discipline on geographically positioned
sites of key interest, on and under the seafloor and up along the water column.
A1 – Survey (Shared/Telescope)
A2 - Design and get agreements (Shared/telescope)
A3 – Build (Shared/telescope)
B – Bring data/images to shore from those instruments (Specific optic fibers in a
shared/telescope cabled backbone infrastructure)
C – Provide energy for these instruments. (Shared/telescope)
D – Coordinate instrument acquisition. (Specific)
D1 - Provide time stamping for the data and images (Specific)
D2 - Coordinate acquisition for distributed sensor packages (Specific)
D3- Coordinate acquisition for complementary sensors (Specific)
E – Ensure calibration and registration of instruments. (Specific)
E1 - Calibration cycle onshore (Specific)
E2 - Sensor registry (Specific)
E3 - In-situ calibration (Specific)
E4 - Anti-fouling protection (Specific)
F – Install in the deep sea and onshore. (Specific)
F1 - Ship operation (Shared/telescope)
F2 - ROV operation (Shared/telescope)
F3 - Shore installation (telescope)
G – Maintain.
G1- Remotely in real time. (Specific)
G2 - Visit periodically and modify instrument setting and ensure safety.
