In South-West-Styria there are 173 schools. This quite high number of schools results from the primary
schools because most municipalities have their own Volksschule. Each district of the region has three
higher secondary schools and almost all of them are located in the district’s capitals; to get one’s A-levels is
the highest degree one can get in the region. There are no institutions which offer tertiary education in the
region. The universities and FH´s (Fachhochschulen) are located in the city of Graz.
Development of pupils
In 2009, 25.510 pupils were recorded in the region. This number
includes all types of schools including the “Berufsschule” (type of
school attended by persons doing an apprenticeship). The number
of pupils within the region has been decreasing by 10,52% from
2001 to 2010. Unfortunately, at the moment no data is available
concerning the years 2003-2006.
It is obvious that there is a clear trend towards a declining numbers of pupils in all of the region’s districts
(Diagram 10). From 2001 – 2009/10 the strongest decline can be observed in the district of Deutschlandsberg
(-18,57%) whereas the decline in Leibnitz was quite moderate (-4,38%).
