Unemployment rates in South-West-Styria have been highly above the Austrian and Styrian average during
the past 10 years (Diagram 6). The average unemployment rate has been around 8%, the districts of Leibnitz
and Voitsberg had the highest unemployment rate in 2009 (8,7%). From 2008 to 2009, unemployment
rates rose in whole Austria. Since this region is an important industry location in Austria, the unemployment
rates have risen faster and higher than in other Austrian regions during the general economic crisis.
