2.3.2. The Collaboration with the UB EAGE <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong>
The University of <strong>Bucharest</strong> EAGE student chapter was founded in the spring of
2009. It is among the first student chapters EAGE has. At that moment there were more
than a few EAGE members in the faculty and no one to maintain the dialogue with the
EAGE so things were a little messy. Until this year, BSC handled the EAGE affairs too,
because there was no organized group to do it. The EAGE activities were short lectures by
EAGE Distinguished Lecturers and participation at the EAGE Annual Meetings.
Unfortunately, BSC did not have sufficient time, thus we decided to found an EAGE
student chapter to look after the EAGE activities.
The EAGE <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong> is intended to the older student of our faculty, <strong>final</strong> year
BS, MSc and PhD students, due to the specialized nature of the EAGE concerns. Most of
the members of this new chapter are also members of the BSC so we decided that there is
no conflict of interest if we made the EAGE <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong> be a special division of the
BSC, like the SEG <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong> is. However, these two are not less important, it is just
an organizational agreement. All the AAPG, the SEG and the EAGE chapters have their
own executive committees within the BSC.
At the time we had the EAGE Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. David Roberts, in
<strong>Bucharest</strong>, the chapter was already founded, so the organizing of the event went very well.
The EAGE <strong>Student</strong> Lecture Tour is an event that has become a tradition in our faculty, it`s
the 3 rd year we have had it. The lecture of Dr. Roberts was called “"Minerals: Who Needs
Them, Who Supplies Them
and How Much Is There?”.
It observed and questioned
the global demand and
supply of minerals and the
role of <strong>geo</strong>logy in this
process. Some of the aspects
applied equally to oil and
gas. The conclusion of the
presentations showed the importance of <strong>geo</strong>logists in the production of minerals and metals
and how <strong>geo</strong>logists need to have a broad understanding of other disciplines if theirs are to
maximize on their career potential. The EAGE <strong>Student</strong> Education Tour is an important part
of the extra curriculum activities we have in the faculty and we are much honored to be part
of it. We hope that our collaboration with the EAGE will get even more satisfactory.
