2.3.3. The collaboration with the Kogayon Association As it is already known, BSC has had a long collaboration with the Kogayon NGO, which was founded in 2003 by students of our faculty, most of which are still members of BSC. One BSC member, PhD Florin Stoican is the president of the asscociaton. Today the association has over 150 members, most of them <strong>geo</strong>sciences students. The Kogayon activity is focused on the „Buila-Vanturarita‟ National Park, which Kogayon Association founded in 2004. Buila Vanturarita Massif is a 4500 ha mountain with a lot of rarities among animals, plants and <strong>geo</strong>morphology sites. This year we continued our collaboration by developing more projects together, projects with benefits for both sites, regarding the implementation of <strong>geo</strong>conservation and <strong>geo</strong>-diversity programs. Also, the Kogayon Association offers us support in making at least one <strong>geo</strong>logic field trip in their park every year, like the one we had in October 2008. The „Buila- Vanturarita‟ National Park is a very good place for <strong>geo</strong>logic field trips as it has a very complex and diverse <strong>geo</strong>logy. Beside <strong>geo</strong>logy, students get the occasion to learn about concepts like protected areas or <strong>geo</strong>conservation. Another project in which we collaborated with the Kogayon Association Page | 17
this year was the construction of the Curmatura Builei Refuge. This was a very bold project as the refuge was going to be built on the limestone ridge of the Buila-Vanturarita Mountains, at about 1600 m altitude, but it was necessary at the same time. As Buila- Vanturarita Massif is a very important objective, both scientifically, as well as touristic, having the more refuges as possible is a key aspect. The construction of the refuge concerned us as <strong>geo</strong>logists who go regularly in that area, so we supported this project greatly. There were 5 volunteer camps and a total of 90 volunteers from 7 organizations, throughout all the erecting stages. Their role was to: demolish the old building salvage the reusable material (wood, stone) carry the construction material on the ridge, as there was no means of transport that could get there reconstruct the stone foundation prepare the material to be used construct the wooden building designing the interior of the refuge However, the main construction work was done by 5 local artisans who were there 60 days besides the volunteer camps that took place in the weekend. It took 2 months to complete the work, and on the July the 5 th we had the grand opening with Champaign and formal attire (with boots on, of course). Page | 18
