this year was the construction of the Curmatura Builei Refuge. This was a very bold project
as the refuge was going to be built on the limestone ridge of the Buila-Vanturarita
Mountains, at about 1600 m altitude, but it was necessary at the same time. As Buila-
Vanturarita Massif is a very important objective, both scientifically, as well as touristic,
having the more refuges as possible is a key aspect. The construction of the refuge
concerned us as <strong>geo</strong>logists who go regularly in that area, so we supported this project
greatly.
There were 5 volunteer camps and a total of 90 volunteers from 7 organizations,
throughout all the erecting stages. Their role was to:
demolish the old building
salvage the reusable material (wood, stone)
carry the construction material on the ridge, as there was no means of transport
that could get there
reconstruct the stone foundation
prepare the material to be used
construct the wooden building
designing the interior of the refuge
However, the main construction work was done by 5 local artisans who were there
60 days besides the volunteer camps that took place in the weekend. It took 2 months to
complete the work, and on the July the 5 th we had the grand opening with Champaign and
formal attire (with boots on, of course).
