8. It is a threatening culm, however. The all'

rai n falls there in torrents, and the thunderstorm once
more rages. Soon the clouds spread seaward from
th e mountains, and the whole sky becomes overcast
and threatening. The sailor off the coast knows
what to expect: his sails are soon filled by the landbreeze,
which will calTY him briskly on his way till
morn ing.
9. This alternation of land and . en breezes i most
regular and perfect in the regions of calm which are
found under the equator and each of the tropics. In
Val pa raiso, for example, during the dry season, when
th ere is no prevailing wind to interfere with the
development of those local breezes, the sea-breeze
begins to move towards the land abo ut tell ill the
morning. By three or four in th e afte rnoo n it reaches
the force of a ga le, and st ops communication between
th e shore and ships in the harbour. By sunset,
how ever, the wind has spent its fury, and th ere is
a perfect calm.
