b = short dimensi<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> panel (inches)<br />
t = thickness of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plate (inches)<br />
C = Coefficient that is a functi<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plating material and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> locati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plating <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ship<br />

■■ 42.629in<br />
42.629" is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> maximum distance that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stiffeners can be apart and have no elastic deformati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> .5 in plating. The current<br />
stiffeners are located 40 in apart. Therefore, according <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Navy Formula, adding a stiffener <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> deck plating will not be<br />
required IF 50 I<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ns or less of ballast is added.<br />
Results<br />
Ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r less ballast must be added <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 4th deck tanks OR stiffening of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> deck plating must occur <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be less than design load.<br />
The design load is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculated head of water for that deck. Similarly, adding a stiffener down <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> middle of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> deck plating<br />
would alleviate any structural c<strong>on</strong>cerns. Adding a stiffener cannot, however, be d<strong>on</strong>e due <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> positi<strong>on</strong>ing of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plating.<br />
Welding would be required <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bot<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>m deck plating and a watch would need <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be stati<strong>on</strong>ed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r side of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> deck. The<br />
tank below this 4th deck tank is foam filled and a fire watch cannot be stati<strong>on</strong>ed. Therefore, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 4th Deck is no l<strong>on</strong>ger an opti<strong>on</strong><br />
unless <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ballast weight <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be added be decreased <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> less than 50 I<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ns.<br />
