4.0 C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong><br />

Solid ballast is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most advantageous soluti<strong>on</strong> for correcting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inherent list <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Nimitz</strong> class aircraft carriers. Table 6 illustrates that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are a number of advantages and<br />

disadvantages that must be c<strong>on</strong>sidered when determining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proper locati<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Perma<br />

Ballast®.<br />

• The 2" deck is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> choice locati<strong>on</strong> for list correcti<strong>on</strong>s at or bey<strong>on</strong>d 1.5 degrees.<br />

The costs associated with adding ballast <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2"^^ deck is much higher, but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

amount of ballast required is significantly less than that required for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 4'^ and 8<br />

decks.<br />

o Advantages:<br />

■ significantly less weight added<br />

o Disadvantages:<br />

■ more costly<br />

■ increased KG*<br />

• For list correcti<strong>on</strong>s less than 1.5 degrees, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> choice locati<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> S'*' deck. Less<br />

than 1.5 degrees, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2"'' and 8"" decks have a fairly comparable weight additi<strong>on</strong>,<br />

however, ballasting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 8'*' deck tanks costs significantly less.<br />

o Advantages:<br />

■ significantly less costly<br />

■ decreased KG*<br />

o Disadvantages:<br />

■ increased weight additi<strong>on</strong><br />

th<br />

*Any positive change in KG serves <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> remaining KG service life allowance. The<br />

average KG service life allowance remaining for most carriers is approximately 1.5 feet. Even<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greatest list correcti<strong>on</strong> of 3 degrees is <strong>on</strong>ly a 7% reducti<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> remaining KG service life<br />

allowance for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aircraft carriers.<br />
