any previous writer, as he worked from official documents and made
extracts from the British records. He was industrious and faithful,
but his work is 'a .jumble of ill-digested material,' is partisan in character,
and, because of a fatal carelessness which marks all that he does,
any statement he may make, unsupported by other evidence, is of little
