Tenth Annual Report of the Library
Since the last issue of the Monthly Bulletin the "Tenth annual
reports to the Board of Trustees," covering the fiscal year
ending January 31, 1906, has come from the press. It is a
pamphlet of 101 pages, and is illustrated with a picture of the
Central Library, exterior and interior views of the new East
Liberty branch, floor plans of that branch, and a map of Pittsburgh
showing the location of the various agencies of the Library
for the period covered by the report. These agencies
numbered 168, classified as follows:
1 Central Library
6 branch libraries.
13 deposit stations
1 call station
2 special children's rooms
56 schools
31 home libraries
49 reading clubs
9 summer playgrounds
The most important event of the year was the opening of
the East Liberty branch on October 10, 1905, and a brief description
of the handsome and well-equipped branch library
building is included in the report.
Owing to building operations at the Central Library and
the consequent closing of several departments for the whole or
part of the year, the statistics of use there showed a decided
decrease over the previous year, though not as great as had
been anticipated. The circulation for the entire system however
amounted to 661,891, an increase over the preceding year
of 16,798, or 2.6 per cent., while the total recorded number of
books and magazines circulated, and used in reading rooms was
1,388,960.
The report is for free distribution and will be sent on request
to any one who desires a copy.
Book Wanted
The Librarian is desirous of securing for the Library a copy
of "Charles C. Mellor's musical almanac for 1868," to add to
its collection of Pittsburgh imprints. Any one therefore who
has a copy of which he wishes to dispose will do a great favor
by communicating this fact to the Librarian.
