Hall (1S00-S9) was for many years one of the most industrious literary
men in London, a parliamentary reporter and for many years the
editor of the "Art journal." He knew most of the artistic and
literary people of his time.
Taylor, Ida Ashworth. Life of Queen Henrietta Maria.
2v. 1905-06 92 H4482t
"Authorities consulted," v.2, p.575-577.
Henrietta Maria (1609-69) was the daughter of Henry IV of France
and wife of Charles I of England. The object of the book is not to
present a period of history, only so far as it is necessary in depicting
the life of the queen. Henrietta Maria is here represented as a vivid
and lovable personality.
John Home. 1822 92 H7571T1
John Home (1722-1808) was a Scotch minister, the author of "Douglas,"
a tragedy very popular in its day.
by the flagrant injustice and brutality which he displayed on the
bench. He presided over the Bloody assizes.
Jevons, William Stanley.
Letters & journal; ed. by his wife. 1886
92 J314
"Mr Jevons' writings," p.459-467.
Jevons (1835-82) was an English economist and logician.
"Singularly full and rich record of a memorable mental history."
Spectator, 1886.
Johnston, Gen. Albert Sidney.
Johnston, William Preston. Life of Gen. Albert Sidney
Johnston, embracing his services in the armies of the
United States, the republic of Texas and the Confederate
states. 1878 92 J367J
The book abounds with interesting incidents and exhibits a character
which was always true to itself. The author fails to see in the origin
of the struggle anything more than the fanaticism of abolitionists,
and no book issued from the Confederate side has more persistently
kept up the false argument based upon garbled returns of opposing
armies. Condensed from Nation, 1878.
