Basis of the book was a pilgrimage made by the author through the
localities in which Jane Austen's life was spent, the homes at Steventon
and Chawton and the more temporary resting-places, many of
them the scenes of her stories, in London, Bath, Southampton,
Lyme Regis, and the lodgings at Winchester in which she died.

The unfinished stories were left by the author without names. Mr
Leigh has called one "The Watsons" for the sake of having a title
by which to designate it.

Richard Bentley (1662-1742) was an English classical scholar and
critic, master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and the author of the
famous "Dissertation on the epistles of Phalaris," over which
a great literary war was waged in England.
