memoir, 1896—1902, by H. M. Spooner.—The primacy, 1896-1902, by
Archbishop Temple (1821 -1902) was successively fellow and tutor of
BalHol, in the Education office, head master of Rugby, bishop of
Exeter, bishop of London and archbishop of Canterbury. Each of
these phases of his career is presented by one of his associates.
Washington, George.
Letters and recollections; being letters to Tobias Lear and
others between 1790 and 1799, showing the first American
in the management of his estate and domestic affairs;
with a diary of Washington's last days kept by
Mr Lear. 1906
92 W272
"Neither the letters to Tobias Lear, who was Washington's secretary
for sixteen years, nor the extracts from Lear's diary relating to
Washington's last illness, nor the miscellaneous letters which complete
this volume, add materially to the knowledge already possessed
of Washington's declining years...But they bring us into very close
touch with the daily life of a great man." Nation, 1906.
Whately, Richard, abp. of Dublin.
Whately, Elizabeth Jane. Life and correspondence of
Richard Whately, late archbishop of Dublin. 2v.
1866 92 W594W
"List of the writings of Dr Whately," v.2, p.460-462.
Miss Whately has performed her task with tact and judgment and has
allowed her father as far as possible to tell his own story in his letters
and journals. The work however must be considered as a profile
rather than as a full portrait. There are many aspects of Whately's
very varied nature and traits and anecdotes of his earlier career,
which are hardly touched upon. Condensed from British quarterly
review, 1S67.
