1866 T973.7 S648
"It is something more than this title would seem to indicate; it really
is a brief account of the people of the free states, of the spirit of their
political system, of their social theories and practice, by a philosophic
student of history, his defence of all these against the attacks commonly
made on them by the friends of absolutism and aristocracy, and
his exposition of their virtues and defects. The literary merits of the
work are such as by themselves make it worthy the perusal of most
readers and the study of most writers." Nation, 1866.
