martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur took place. Guru Sahib was put in a<br />

cage for a number of days, was pressurized to embrace Islam, and<br />

offered several allurements too. But when, all the tactics could not<br />

work, he was beheaded in full view of the public in Chandni Chowk,<br />

under the orders ofthe monarch, at this spot. Before he was beheaded<br />

three ofhis close associate Sikhs; Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass and<br />

Bhai Dayala, were tortured to death in a most heinous way in the<br />

presence of Guru Sahib to intimidate him, but Guru Sahib sticked to<br />

his stand that was later described as<br />

'BAANHE JINHA 01 PAKARIYEE, SIR DEEJEY BAANHEY NA CHHOREYE,<br />

GURU TEG BAHADUR BOllA, DHAR PAYIEE DHARMA NA CHHORIYEE<br />

and as said by Guru Gobind Singh Sahib,<br />

'THEEKAR PHOR DILLIS SIR, PRABH PUR KIYO PIYAAN,<br />

TEG BAHADUR 51 KIRYA KARHEE NA KINHOON AAN'.<br />

To commemorate the memory ofgreat martyrs, the associate Gur<br />

Sikhs ofSahib Sri Guru Teg Bahadur, the Chowk, the famous crossing<br />

that was hitherto fore was known as 'Fountain', Delhi, has been<br />

renamed by the government as 'Bhai Mati Dass Chowk' and a Sikh<br />

Museum has been built opposite the building of Gurdwara Sahib<br />

in the name of the martyrs, Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass and<br />

Bhai Dayala. (Note: Their martyrdom has been discussed in part IV­<br />

'The <strong>Sikhism</strong> and Martyrdom', at pages 157-58).<br />

4. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib: Gurdwara Rakab Ganj is<br />

another Gurdwara that is directly associated to the martyrdom ofGuru<br />

Teg Bahadur. In addition it also shows undaunted and heroic courage<br />

ofa Gursikh Bhai Lakhi Shah Vanjara, who lifte
