The Scholarship of Engagement for Politics at UCC. Its introduction is an attempt to meet the challenges put forward by an increasingly demanding and career-orientated student body. The emphasis within the BSc in Government degree is (still) about the development of independent learners and critical thinkers, and traditional teaching methods such as lectures and tutorials are widely used. However, as educators place more emphasis on the student experience, the dominance of teaching-centred approaches is moderating. Modern-day universities are centres of ‘learner activity’ (Gibbs 1995), ‘a highly social enterprise that requires the constant development of human relationships and communication’ (University of Westminster 2004: 3). Placement learning certainly facilitates this type of learning. As can be seen from this chapter, the Department of Government’s experience of placement learning has been very positive. It has resulted in positive feedback from students and employers, and there is some evidence that shows placement is beneficial to students when searching for post-degree employment. It is likely that placement learning will continue to be used as a teaching method to promote student learning and understanding of political science in UCC for many years to come.
