Rethinking Placement Learning <strong>for</strong> <strong>Politics</strong> and International Relations<br />

<strong>The</strong> Responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the Universities<br />

Placement<br />

Organisation<br />

<strong>The</strong> universities will:<br />

• agree with the placement provider the learning<br />

opportunities that will be made available to the<br />

student on placement;<br />

• select a suitable student <strong>for</strong> the placement; and<br />

• provide a full briefing <strong>for</strong> the student and<br />

placement provider be<strong>for</strong>e the placement<br />

commences.<br />

Assessment<br />

<strong>The</strong> universities will assess the placement through a<br />

module <strong>of</strong> study linked to the placement.<br />

Health and Safety<br />

<strong>The</strong> universities will ensure that the placement<br />

provider satisfies the necessary health and safety<br />

requirements.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the Placement Provider<br />

Learning<br />

Opportunities<br />

Activities to be undertaken by the student:<br />

Assessment<br />

Although not <strong>for</strong>mally involved in the assessment <strong>of</strong><br />

the placement, the placement provider will provide<br />

the student with sufficient learning opportunities to<br />

allow the student to complete the assessment<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the placement. <strong>The</strong> placement<br />

provider will in<strong>for</strong>m the universities <strong>of</strong> any problems<br />

that arise that may seriously affect the student’s<br />

ability to complete the assessment related to the<br />

placement.<br />

Health and Safety<br />

By the start <strong>of</strong> the placement, the placement<br />

provider should have read through the Health and<br />

Safety: Guidance <strong>for</strong> Placement Providers document<br />

and in<strong>for</strong>med the placement tutor <strong>of</strong> any problems in<br />

complying with the expectations set out therein. <strong>The</strong><br />

placement provider should also run through the<br />

induction checklist (Appendix I below) with the<br />

student on the first day <strong>of</strong> the placement.<br />
