CEDIA education sessions at ISE 2012 31 Jan 2012 1000 - 1700 Home Cinema Design Workshop Geoff Meads The technical design for a high performance Home Cinema is not a subjective decision. For every parameter, there is a standard that should be observed in order to offer a truly immersive entertainment experience. This course will examine those standards and give you an insight into the importance of designing cinemas using standards based engineering calculations rather than subjective guesswork. The morning will be classroom based where the instructor will introduce the standards and the engineering skills necessary to apply them. The afternoon will be spent working in small groups applying the knowledge gained in the morning. During the afternoon workshop, a number of additional subject matter experts will be on hand to spend time with individual groups to help with the design. By the end of this course, delegates will understand how applying engineering standards to cinema design ensures a high standard of repeatable performance. 1030 - 1330 Choosing and Using Control Systems Simon Buddle A Control System is the heart of a fully integrated home. With todays systems becoming increasingly commoditised with the introduction of iPhones as user interfaces and with less expensive product becoming more and more sophisticated, this course is the essential guide to how to specify and select the correct control solution for your clients. The course will examine how users like to interact with technology as well as explaining how to select the correct user interface for any given situation. Also discussed will be the golden rules of systems integration that should be adhered to in order to deliver an exciting, but reliable user experience to your clients. 1030 - 1330 Introduction to Residential Custom Installation Michael Blake Aimed at new entrants to the integrated home business, this CEDIA course will provide a grounding to enable participants to either find employment or start their own businesses in this growing industry.The course has been developed in response to individuals who want to make a career or start a business in the industry but are unsure where to start or what opportunities exist. The course is presented in a relaxed and informal style with lots of opportunity for discussion and questions. Though not technical, by the end of the course participants will have a good understanding about the scope of a project and will be able to decide upon their next step in the industry. 1400 - 1530 Technology and Consumer Trends Peter Aylett Highlighting future technologies and perceptions that will affect the residential integration sector, this session will examine the trends that are set to mould our industry in the coming years. Among the topics to be discussed: Complete an in-depth discussion of how HDMI and HDCP work; Identify common HDMI/HDCP failures; Read and interpret HDMI test specifications. 1000 - 1300 IP for Integrators Geoff Meads The purpose of this course is to provide a foundation for understanding IP (Internet Protocol). It is appropriate for both beginners and individuals looking to formalize and increase their IP networking knowledge base. With the vast majority of subsystems now having the ability to be converged over an IP network, this is arguably the most important topic to make sure that you have a solid foundation in. At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to: Discuss the advantages and importance of the growth in IP networking; Explain common network protocols such as TCP, UDP, IP, DHCP, DNS, and NAT; Select, install, and configure consumer routers for wired environments; Create and implement IP addressing schemes for connected network devices (computers, AV, lighting control, etc.); Create system documentation for IP networks. 1000 - 1300 The Art of Project Documentation Simon Buddle Possibly the most important element in the smooth running of any project is the quality of the prepared documentation. This includes the bill of materials (the quote), functional (architectural) specification, cable schedules, schematic drawings, plan drawings and detail drawings. This course will teach you how to use documentation to ensure great project communication. We will be giving you practical tips on how to layout the documents as well as going through proper revision management. 1400 - 1700 Practical Media Delivery over IP Technologies Gordon Van Zuiden Broadband Internet access is now the 4th utility, as important to the homeowner as gas, electricity, and water. High-speed network services offer a staggering array of entertainment content which, thanks to ever-increasing network speeds and new licensing models, customers can now enjoy right across their home and beyond.In this course we will explore and discuss how modern higher bandwidth networks can deliver audio and video to network ready TVs and networked audio systems. We will review the initial introduction of distributed IP audio/video content in the home about a decade ago, how it has evolved over the last 10 years, and what these services could look like in the future. Most importantly we will discuss how professional installers can add value to these systems with professional design, installation and control and finally look at Apple and Android IP based home automation applications (lighting control, cameras, security, thermostats, pools/hot tubs, etc.). By the end of this course attendees will gain an understanding of the design, infrastructure, and control solutions needed to maximize the benefit and enjoyment of todays distributed residential IP audio/ video solutions. 1545 - 1715 Embracing the Cloud Peter Aylett For description see 31 Jan 2012. 2 Feb 2012 1000 - 1300 Delivering 3D Dave Pedigo 3D is a moving target both in terms of product technology and marketplace acceptance. This seminar will bring you up to date on the hardware and software so that you are better able to answer your clients questions and create the best 3D installations. 1000 - 1300 Introduction to HVAC systems Dave Robinson Rising energy costs, green issues and customers expectations of an integrated home mean that installers are being asked to include control of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) in homes. This course explains explain the basics of HVAC systems including both heating and cooling systems and explains new technologies such as heat pumps and solar thermal heating. It also covers control of HVAC, with the emphasis on energy efficiency and comfort. Well discuss user interfaces (often subtly different to those for audio/video and lighting) and touch on contractual issues such as who is responsible for what. By the end of this course you will gain a good working knowledge of HVAC terms, of how the mechanical systems work, and the issues involved in controlling them. On-site certification: CEDIA EST2 1000 - 1630 CEDIA EST2 Certification Exam (English, French and Spanish) By establishing clear, objective standards for the required skills and knowledge of electronics system designers and installers, CEDIA Professional Certification delivers a range of benefits to individuals, consumers, integration companies and manufacturers. By defining a series of benchmarks for designers and installers, CEDIA Professional Certification will promote professionalism and growth throughout the industry. CEDIA EST2 is the baseline technical certification suitable for anyone with a technical role within Residential Integrated technology design and installation.It is the first step within a structured certification path offered by CEDIA. Aimed at people who wish to become CEDIA EST2 certified, the first 3 hours of the day is an optional revision session to help candidates prepare for the exam. Questions must be prepared in advance and emailed to education@ cedia.co.uk no later than 20 January. We will do our best to answer additional questions on the day but cannot guarantee that appropriate teaching materials will be available. The only subjects that will be covered in the revision session (held in English) will be in response to questions from attendees. Candidates are given 3 hours to complete the exam. This session does not cover the curriculum in any depth, and is intended only for candidates who have studied the curriculum.
