Citizenship?<br />

• Today, most <strong>Europe</strong>an countries allow<br />

immigrants to become citizens if they have<br />

lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> for “x” years OR if their<br />

children were born <strong>in</strong> the country.<br />

• Many countries also have citizenship tests requir<strong>in</strong>g civic<br />

knowledge & loyalty oaths (Brita<strong>in</strong>).<br />

• Citizenship is a recent phenomenon for most <strong>Europe</strong>an<br />

<strong>Muslims</strong> (last 20 years). <strong>Europe</strong>ans never <strong>in</strong>tended these<br />

“guest workers” to stay permanently.<br />

• In many countries (Germany), Muslim citizens are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

perceived as be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ferior & are referred to as “passport<br />

citizens.”<br />
