Istanbul is still a major city but <strong>Europe</strong>an countries are now far outstripp<strong>in</strong>g the Ottomans <strong>in</strong> the<br />

number and the size <strong>of</strong> their cities. S<strong>in</strong>ce cities will be the heart <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustrial revolution<br />

where large factories will be built, the lack <strong>of</strong> cities will pose problems for the ability to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrialize and turn out mass-produced goods.<br />

7. Compare the populations <strong>of</strong> the Ottoman Empire with the populations <strong>of</strong> the Austro-<br />

Hungarian and Russian Empire.<br />
