A novel fiber optic tap utilizing both surface relief microlenses and a<br />
volume element was demonstrated. A fiber array bundle in a silicon V-groove<br />
was also made to test diffractive lens coupling. The best measured single lens<br />
coupling efficiency was 17%.<br />
Future work in this area should be directed at making higher order phase<br />
level lenses which exhibit much larger diffraction efficiencies. This should lead<br />
to improvements in coupling efficiency. Alignment and packaging techniques<br />
for maximizing coupling with the microlens arrays is another area for future<br />
research.
