On the 27 April 2014, South Africa will celebrate its 20th Year of Democracy.
Standing in the amphitheatre of the mighty Union Buildings on 27th April 1994, Nelson R Mandela took an oath as
President to lead a troubled country and its people into a new future built on the foundations of freedom and democracy.
This freedom and democracy came at a great cost to countless individuals, fortunately however, this new democracy
was steered by great leaders with vision, compassion and forgiveness. The new Constitution pointed towards a
united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous society based on justice, equality, the rule of law and the
inalienable human rights of all.
Paying tribute to South Africa’s successful democracy in spite of its history, the South African Mint celebrates this
momentous event with its silent “ambassadors” in pure gold and silver. Every coin in its 2014 coin series reflects a
country that is proud of its achievements over the past 20 years.
