Conditions<br />

Observations and measurements were made on plants grown<br />

in Monterey County, California, USA. <strong>Plant</strong>s were asexually<br />

propagated in a nursery in Shasta County, California USA<br />

and transplanted to raised soil beds in Monterey County.<br />

<strong>Plant</strong>s were grown in plastic covered raised beds in full<br />

sunlight under standard growing conditions. <strong>Plant</strong>s grown in<br />

Palmwoods, QLD <strong>Australia</strong> were used to confirm<br />

observations and characteristics.<br />

Trial Design The new variety ‘DrisStrawFourteen’ was planted in rows<br />

side by side with comparators ‘San Juan’ (US PP12899) and<br />

‘Driscoll Lanai’ (US PP15145) in the field from 2005 to<br />

2009.<br />

Measurements Observations and measurements in accordance with UPOV<br />

terminology and guidelines were taken in the field and a<br />

detailed description prepared for the new variety<br />

‘DrisStrawFourteen’. Colour designations are described using<br />

the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour charts.<br />

Origin and Breeding<br />

Controlled pollination: The new variety ‘DrisStrawFourteen’ originated as a result of<br />

a controlled cross pollination between the proprietary breeding lines ‘159K312’<br />

(female parent) and ‘128K296’ (pollen parent) in an ongoing breeding program. The<br />

resulting seedling was asexually propagated in Shasta County, California USA and<br />

was subsequently propagated from stolons from 2005 to 2009 where the<br />

characteristics remained true to type through successive generations. Breeders: Philip<br />

J Stewart, Martin P Madesko, JoAnne F Cross and Bruce D Mowrey all employees of<br />

Driscoll Strawberry Associates Inc. Watsonville, California USA.<br />
