Characteristics (Table 5, Figure 25) Plant: stem length<br />

medium, stem thickness medium, density of foliage<br />

medium. Leaf: length short to medium, width medium,<br />

shape of blade elliptic, longitudinal axis of blade straight.<br />

Inflorescence: number of branches in umbel medium,<br />

length of branches in umbel short, length of pedicel<br />

medium. Flower: main colour pink and white, size medium<br />

to large, spread of tepals large. Outer tepal: shape of blade<br />

broad obovate, depth of emargination very shallow, stripes<br />

on inner side of blade absent, colour red purple RHS 62A,<br />

57C at the apex and upper margins and white at centre and<br />

base. Inner lateral tepals: shape of blade obovate, colour red<br />

purple RHS 62A at the apex and white at centre and base,<br />

number of stripes medium, thickness of stripes small to<br />

medium. Inner median tepal: yellow colour absent, stripes<br />

absent. Stamens: filament colour red-purple, spots absent,<br />

anther colour yellowish. Pistil: ovary anthocyanin<br />

colouration medium, colour of style red-purple, colour of<br />

stigma red-purple, spots on stigma absent. (Note: all RHS<br />

numbers referred to in local observation were based on the<br />

1986 edition.)<br />

Origin and Breeding Controlled pollination: seed parent<br />

90394-2 x pollen parent HA08, in a planned breeding<br />

program at the applicant’s research station at Hillegom, The<br />

Netherlands. Both parents are non-commercial varieties<br />

within the breeding programme. Selection criteria: from<br />

this cross ‘Zanysia’ was chosen on the basis of flower<br />

colour, stem production and quality. Propagation: a number<br />

of mature stock plants were generated from the original<br />

seedling by tissue culture through 10 generations to confirm<br />

uniformity and stability. ‘Zanysia’ will be commercially<br />

propagated by tissue culture. Breeder: Paul Schoorl,<br />

Aalsmeer, The Netherlands.<br />

Choice of Comparators The grouping characteristics used<br />

in identifying the most similar varieties of common<br />

knowledge were – Flower: main colour red-purple on apex<br />

and margins and white at the centre and base of the outer<br />

tepals. On the basis of these grouping characteristics,<br />

‘Andes’ A (PVJ 8.1) and ‘Vienna’ A (PVJ 8.3) were<br />

considered as the most similar varieties of common<br />

knowledge. Initially, ‘Pink Diamond’ A (formerly<br />

‘Testapink’ syn Pink Diamond, PVJ 12.4), ‘Stabec’ A syn<br />

Rebecca A (PVJ 9.1) and ‘Java’ (PVJ 8.3) were also<br />

considered as comparators but were excluded as they differ<br />

in the amount and location of the red purple colour.<br />

Comparative Trial Comparisons of most of the<br />

characteristics are based on Dutch trials, which were<br />

assessed under conditions of controlled environment in<br />

glasshouses. Characteristics of the comparators are derived<br />

from published descriptions in the Plant Varieties Journal.<br />

Detailed flower descriptions of the candidate variety are<br />

based on plants growing in a soil in a multispan polyhouse<br />

at Bunyip, VIC. Flowers from these plants were cut in bud<br />

in Apr 2002 and transferred to Devon Meadows, VIC and<br />

placed in a solution of 5% sugar and 1 ml/l chlorine bleach.<br />

The flowers were assessed 3 to 4 days later.<br />
