MOVIE MARKETING > THE TWILIGHT SAGA XAVIER SAMUEL LEADS THE PACK IN THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE SPEAKING OF ECLIPSE, IT HAS AN IN- TERESTING QUIRK: IT’S THE SMALLEST OPENING WEEKEND IN THE SERIES BUT WITH THE BIGGEST OVERALL BOX OFFICE HAUL. I think that’s all about summer. In summer, you have movies playing all during the midweek. Even though there’s much more competition for opening-weekend business, you have better legs because the movie can play all through July and August. Whereas the November releases, the movie has pretty much played itself out by New Years. But while they hold better in the summer, internationally the November movies play much better because people take August off in Europe. WHAT’S THE RELATIONSHIP BEEN LIKE BETWEEN THE TWILIGHT FRAN- CHISE AND EXHIBITION, AND HOW HAVE YOU SEEN IT CHANGE ONCE EVERYONE KNEW THAT THEY HAD A MONEYMAKER? It definitely became the movie to have that weekend in November. Exhibitors have been incredibly supportive of the movie. They’ve let us do things like run marathons of the earlier films. They’ve obviously been very supportive of our Thursday midnight screenings—they’ve even shown the film not only at midnight but throughout the night through Friday morning. Whenever you have an exhibitor who’s willing to keep their doors open and have 46 BOXOFFICE PRO NOVEMBER 2012
