AFTER THE SUCCESS OF BRIDES-
MAIDS, THERE WAS A LOT OF CHAT-
TER ABOUT HOW STUDIOS HAD
REALIZED THE POWER OF FEMALE-
DRIVEN COMEDIES AND WERE GOING
TO START THROWING MONEY AT
MORE PROJECTS. NOW THAT A YEAR
AND A HALF HAS GONE BY, HAS
THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?
I don’t really feel like it has. Though I have to
be honest, I haven’t been looking to work in
the last six months. But I hope it has or will
change. I think there’s always going to be a
whole audience that wants to go and see these
comedies. I know how excited I get for any
female comedy—I’ll go and see anything that’s
written by women or stars women—because I
want to support them. It does feel like it’s hard
to see stuff for us.
THE TOOTH
FAIRY
THE GUARDIAN OF
MEMORIES
SO WOMEN WHO WANT TO SEE
MORE FEMALE COMEDIES SHOULD
GO OUT AND BUY TICKETS FOR
THEM—EVEN THE NOT-SO-GOOD
ONES—BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PUT
YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR TASTE
IS.
Absolutely. You have to support everyone. It’s
encouraging. There are so many bad maledriven
comedies that continue to get made.
Comedy is just hit and miss—it’s harder in
some ways than drama.
