Killing Them Softly corrals a bunch of famous
faces from crime flicks (Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini,
Animal Kingdom’s Ben Mendelsohn)
to be slowly and stylishly mowed down by a
sociopathic Brad Pitt. Armed with a goatee
and a gun, Pitt plays a mob detective/enforcer
assigned to clean up the mess after a heist in a
gangland poker game goes wrong. Writer-director
Andrew Dominik pairs up with Pitt again
after their last venture, the artsy The Assassination
of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,
was shot dead by poor box office returns.

BRIDESMAID GONE WILD
Perpetually put-upon good guy Jason Bateman
finds his comedy dream team partner in
Melissa McCarthy, last seen stealing every scene
in Bridesmaids and winning an Emmy for Mike
& Molly. After finding a sleeper hit in Horrible
Bosses, Bateman joined forces again with Bosses
director Seth Gordon to make another adult
comedy. But the star everyone will be looking
at is McCarthy. After the runaway success of
Bridesmaids, McCarthy has a string of comedies
lined up for the coming year, including
December’s Knocked Up sequel This Is 40, plus
The Heat with Sandra Bullock in April 2013
and a small role in next summer’s The Hangover
Part III. Identity Thief finds mild-mannered
office drone Sandy (Bateman) pursuing the
shamelessly greedy Diana (McCarthy), who has
been maxing out his credit cards without his
knowledge. Diana may be dowdy, but she uses
her highly developed con artistry and neckpunching
skills to lose Sandy fast. The car chase
and physical fight scenes between Sandy and
Diana raise the stakes—and adrenaline levels—
of their unpredictable cat-and-mouse game.
