EXOLIGHT
ASK THE EXPERT.
“THE SPECIAL THING ABOUT THE EXOLIGHT? IT WEIGHS LESS
THAN TWO KILOS AND PITCHES IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE! WE
DESIGNED IT WITH MULTI-DAY TRIPS IN MIND.”
Falko Schott, Product Manager Equipment
How does the EXOLIGHT differ from other
2 and 3 person tents? What sets the
EXOLIGHT apart is the combination of
low weight and high stability. There
are lightweight tents out there that
might weigh less but don’t have the
same stability.
How did you manage to make it so light
and stable? When designing the components
we opted for materials that were
as light as possible but still robust. Every
detail was checked and the weight reduced
wherever possible. We tested the
EXOLIGHT in the wind tunnel; it can withstand
speeds of up to 80km/h. The reason
for that lies in the new pole construction
and the aerodynamic shape, which we
developed together with the pole specialists
DAC.
Why did you opt for an external pole system?
It makes the tent quicker to pitch. The
pole system is fully connected. The pole
ends are slotted into the corners of the
tent. The tent is then attached to the
pole framework using the special clips.
What about the tent fabric? How tough is
that? For the EXOLIGHT we have used
an ultralightweight, high tenacity 20D
polyamide fabric with a ripstop grid
structure, a silicone coating on the outside
and a PU coating on the inside.
The silicone coating increases the tear
strength and UV resistance. The PU coating
on the inside allows the seams to be
tape sealed for waterproofness; this is
not possible with full silicone coatings.
Where do you see the EXOLIGHT being used?
On long trekking trips where weight is
an issue. Our objective was to build a
lightweight tent with an acceptable level
of comfort and a compact pack size, the
idea being that you can sit out the odd
rainy day in comfort and the tent can
be stowed easily in your rucksack when
you’re on the move.
