MATERIALS GLOSSARY
90/10 WHITE DUCK DOWN, 700 cuin: Extremely warm
and light down fill with 90 % white duck down. Combining
the down with extremely lightweight shell fabrics allows
it to achieve its very high (700 cuin) fill power. Working
together with the renowned International Down and
Feather Testing Laboratory (IDFL), we are implementing
binding directives to ensure that our products do not contain
down from birds that are force­fed or live­plucked. The
down mix contains non­textile parts of animal origin.
Down apparel in summer:
light and packable insulation for mountain sports.
AIR CORE 16/13: This open pored foam material is used
for the core of our self­inflating mats. It traps plenty of air
for insulation and provides outstanding cushioning. We use
two thicknesses: 13 kg/m 3 for our ultra lightweight mats,
16 kg/m 3 for our more comfortable 4­season mats. The
horizontal holes in the foam core of the mat reduce the
weight by 20 % without impacting on the insulation performance.
AIRGRID 20D: Super­lightweight, windproof fabric
made from extremely fine denier polyester. It weighs just
40 g/m 2 , is water resistant, very soft and has an extremely
compact pack size. The ripstop construction with reinforcement
threads gives sufficient tear strength in spite of the
low weight.
ALUMINIUM 6061: A high­strength, flexible aluminium
alloy used in our rucksack suspension systems.
ALUMINIUM HONEY COMB: Hollow aluminium rods
with a honeycomb core, used in our rucksack suspension
systems. This saves weight while ensuring good shape retention.
ANTISLIP POLYESTER 75D: Fabric used for the surface
of our mats with a soft, lightly textured anti­slip finish.
AQUA FLOW: This drainage system is component part of
our WATER TRACK sole. Drainage ducts in the outsole,
footbed and uppers allow water to drain away quickly
and air to circulate freely for an improved wear climate.
ARIZONA: A flexible hiking sole for children’s footwear,
suitable for a wide range of activities. It provides a high
level of wear comfort and consists of four components:
1. rubber outsole with aggressive tread for a secure grip
2. integrated shock pads in forefoot and heel
3. lightweight insole
4. removable, cushioning EVA footbed
ARMATECH PLUS 600D: An abrasion resistant fabric
made from textured (crinkled) polyester yarns. This fabric
is so versatile that we use it for numerous different products,
from rucksacks to travel bags and accessories. The
reverse side has a polyurethane coating for lasting waterproofness.
The fabric is also colourfast and UV resistant.
BALLISTIC 840D: A heavy­duty nylon fabric with remarkable
abrasion resistance, used on the bases of our bags
and rucksacks.
BASIC HOOD: Our standard­issue detachable hood is
anatomically cut, follows the natural turning movement
of the head and can be adjusted with one hand. The volume
and field of vision are individually adjustable. It is attached
to the collar by press studs or a zip and features an integrated
visor.
BLUESIGN ® APPROVED FABRIC: Products with the
“bluesign® approved fabric” label contain fabrics and
materials manufactured in accordance with the bluesign®
standard. They are skin­friendly, pose no health risks to the
user and fulfil the most stringent environmental criteria.
BLUE WATER: This sandal sole is specially designed for
children’s growing feet. It has two components:
1. anti­slip rubber outsole with ribbed tread for good grip
and stability
2. comfortable footbed with antibacterial function (inhibits
growth of odour causing bacteria); either waterproof
EVA or with microfibre covering fabric depending on the
model
CANYON: Very lightweight sandal sole suitable for land
and water based activities. It consists of three components:
1. anti­slip rubber outsole with very high natural latex
content (bonded to the EVA midsole like a mesh and
therefore extremely light)
2. EVA midsole with good cushioning performance; extra
shock pad in the heel
3. ergonomically shaped footbed with antibacterial function
(inhibits formation of bacteria and associated unpleasant
odours)
COMFORT FIT: This denotes that the pants are tailored
to provide maximum freedom of movement. They have a
more generous fit around the backside and extra width in
the legs. It is found in our trekking, hiking and travel pants.
COOLMAX: COOLMAX fabrics are very fast drying, soft,
kind to the skin and keep their shape well. The special
yarn structure increases the effective surface area and
produces exceptionally high capillary forces. The fabrics
blot up sweat effectively and wick it away from the skin to
the outer surface where it evaporates quickly.
CORDURA SUPPLEX DWR: This lightweight, extra robust
fabric combines the properties of two nylon fibres,
CORDURA and SUPPLEX: extremely high tear strength
and abrasion resistance, a high UV protection factor (UPF
40+, meets AS/NZS 4399:1996 standard) and a soft, cotton­like
feel. The fabric has a DWR (Durable Water Repellent)
treatment.
CORNER EDGES: These vertical stabilizer struts at the
corners of the tent provide improved wind stability and
increased internal space and simplify the pitching procedure.
COTTON HEAVY SINGLE JERSEY HEATHER: Cotton
sweatshirt fabric with a mottled appearance.
CRINKLE NYLON: A robust, easy­care polyamide fabric
with a crinkled finish. We use it predominantly in our kids’
and travel apparel.
CROSS RIP: These lightweight high tenacity polyamide
or polyester fabrics have a matrix of ripstop reinforcement
threads. If the fabric tears, these threads stop the rip, hence
the name: ripstop. We use different deniers of CROSS RIP
fabrics in our bags and rucksacks.
CROSSLINK PE: A special cross­linked polyethylene material
with high tensile strength and durability, used as a
back plate in our ACS TIGHT suspension system for bike
packs. The back plate stops hard items pressing through
with out restricting freedom of movement. Ventilation openings
prevent heat build­up in the contact area.
DAC: The Dongah Aluminium Corporation (DAC) specialises
in the manufacture of high quality aluminium tubing.
A particular area of expertise is the development and manufacture
of tent poles. We have worked together with DAC
for many years to develop suitable poles for our tents.
DAYWALKER: Extremely light and flexible sole designed
for footwear for travel or day trips. It consists of:
1. outsole with very flexible rubber implants
2. extremely lightweight EVA midsole for good cushioning
3. thin EVA insole providing light cushioning
4. perforated EVA footbed with moisture regulating polyester
covering fabric
