2 May 1986 Arizona Senate Bill 1011 signed into law. It intended to direct<br />
compatible l<strong>and</strong> use in areas affected by military air operations,<br />
but weakened in House when zoning left to municipalities <strong>and</strong><br />
suggested rather than directed compatible l<strong>and</strong> use.<br />
30 June 1986 After close coordination with <strong>Luke</strong> AFB, a new Glendale <strong>Air</strong>port<br />
was opened some four miles east of the base.<br />
1 October 1986 Maricopa County Joint L<strong>and</strong>-Use Study (JLUS) Committee<br />
conducted own noise study on <strong>Luke</strong> operations. USAF<br />
contributed $60,000 for study.<br />

1986 Papago Indians at Sells, Arizona, change name to Tohono<br />
O'odham.<br />
23 March 1987 <strong>Luke</strong> Range renamed Barry M. Goldwater Range for retired US<br />
Senator Barry M. Goldwater (Rep, Arizona). At dedication<br />
Goldwater declared, "...<strong>Luke</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> <strong>Base</strong> will be here<br />
forever."<br />
9 June 1987 US Supreme Court ruling on taking directed l<strong>and</strong>owners be<br />
compensated when new restrictions denied them use of their<br />
l<strong>and</strong>.<br />
1 July 1987 944th <strong>Fighter</strong> Group (AFRES) activated. 302d Special<br />
Operations Squadron redesignated tactical fighter squadron,<br />
equipped with F-16s, <strong>and</strong> assigned to 944th <strong>Fighter</strong> Group.<br />
21 December 1987 USAF canceled plans to base Midgetman Missile on Goldwater<br />
Range. Basing system on range would have restricted its use as<br />
overflying nuclear sites prohibited.<br />
4 March 1988 First class of two Republic of Singapore AF pilots entered<br />
training with 311th Tactical <strong>Fighter</strong> Training Squadron under a<br />
Peace Carvin Foreign Military Sales Program.
